Transponder Maps: Domestic, LatinAm and SkyMex New Data 12/19/2012

The First Excel attachment to this post, TPN_MAP_Domestic, covers all U.S. DIRECTV Channels and Transponders, CONUS (Continental U.S. or wide/National beams) and LIL (Local-Into-Local or narrow/Spot beams). Satellites at the 95W, 99W, 101W, 103W, 110W and 119W positions are included.

Note that at the bottom of the Domestic Excel page, there are eight tabs or 'sheets':

CONUS TPN MAP all CONUS channels in channel number sequence

LIL TPN MAP all Local-Into-Local satellite channels in Market Number (alpha market name) sequence

OTA all Over-The-Air channels in network number (market name) sequence

HYBRIDS all Hybrid and Offline (Inactive) channels, in channel number sequence

LIL MARKET LIST Local Market database and cross reference information necessary to navigate the LIL TPN Map

CHANNEL COUNT a count of channels provided per satellite

NETWORK DECODER display of the satellites and transponders graphically as it appears on your receiver's signal strength display

TUTORIAL a procedure to find channel information and signal strength using interactive SHEF (IP) commands with your DVR

A Second Excel attachment, TPN_MAP_LatinAm, covers DIRECTVLA Latin America transponders.

Note that at the bottom of the LatinAm Excel page, there are seven tabs or 'sheets':

A New fledgling Third Excel attachment, TPN_MAP_SkyMex, covers SKY-Mexico transponders. SKY-Mexico is 42% owned by Directv. This is just a beginning; there is much detail to be added.

Pardon me if this has been covered already, but what does A3 stand for? For instance the full description for one of my locals in the guide data is A3 KYW 3 CBS Philadelphia

Sometimes comments naming such channels as "Advanced". Real full name of "A3" is still unknown.
Technically, it would be MPEG-4 [H.264] channels on DVB-S2D transponders (mostly Ka, but there are a few tpns on 95W and one [24] on 119W).

It's all Doctor J's fault that the previous entry was marathon post.

I don't recall EVER having this much LIL activity in a one week span. The activity and growth are great signs!

Confusing thing is though, unless they are direct fiber or microwave HD feeds, not all the ones listed for the L.A. market are currently broadcasting in HD.

Looking at their OTA feeds, KWHY-22 and KFTR-46 main "-1" sub-channels are in HD, but KAZA-54 and KJLA-57 are only SD.

Was happy at first to see KVCR-24 (PBS) up in test since I can't receive their HD signal off-air. But then see the notes list it as their secondary SD sub-channel 24-2.

Why put these SD local channels up on Ka-band/MPEG-4 when they have Ku Band/MPEG-2 versions at 101?

Perhaps via fiber these channels could be passed in original HD format, while using OTA sub-channels require to downres it ?

Is the WLVT feed simply an Spanish Audio track taken away, or are we talking about the entire HD feed?

To my knowledge, WZPA was only offered in SD, so they simply dropped the channel, correct?

Aside from the two channels listed above, and the test feeds put up today (due to the fact that I want to make it clearer that a channel is being tested in HD), I have updated the list.

I've been very familiar with that page this last week or so...

According to it, WLVT is now SD only, and WZPA is no longer offered.

WLVT (PBS 39) is still in HD here.
WZPA which I never heard of doesn't seem to be in this market. I think the tables said that was Channel 33. I typed 33 and it did not go through.

I am in the Philadelphia market.
We did just recently get WMCN 44 (IND), A telemundo station (62 I think) and WFMZ 69 (IND) in HD. What surprised me is WMCN 44. I never knew they had an HD feed. MCN stands for "Market Connect Network" and its 90% infomercials or cars for sale with a phone number across the bottom of the screen. A Philadelphia area Kia dealer actually has 30 minute blocks of programming. Right now Ch 44 has a DirecTV slate that says we are experiencing technical difficulties. There's no need to call us, we are working on the problem.

531 NBC 26 A3 Biloxi 26 WXXVDT2 NBC NBC television services from WXXVDT2-TV, 26, Biloxi, MS

Although the station is sending them a HD feed via fiber, DirecTV has chosen to only retransmit that feed in SD. Allegedly due to bandwidth constraints.

Update and corrections:

Recently checked, which I don't usually do since they're Spanish, but KAZA-54 is broadcasting OTA in HD format now.

KJLA-57 is broadcasting in SD, but is apparently sending DIRECTV a separate 720p HD feed by fiber or microwave.

KVCR 24-2 is not merely an SD version of its main "-1" sub-channel as I thought, but is called "KVCR FNX" for "First Nations Experience." Geared toward ethnic programming for native americans. This sub-channel presently in test mode will be carried in MPEG-4 SD I guess.

I know all this because of a technical quirk on the HR34 first discovered when national TCM-HD was in test, allows me to view the HD local test feeds as well.

Are all viewable right now.

*KWHY shows up on the "View Upcoming" search list, but is always blank (no video or audio) and I'm not able to set a recording to add its channel number to QuickTune.

[STRIKE]Can't see *KVCR's (FNX 24-2) test feed because I can't do a View Upcoming search for it since all its programming is unique to that channel only it seems and none is ever duplicated on the live SD feed in the guide.[/STRIKE]

EDIT: Finally found a future duplicated program on both KVCR's main sub-channel and KVCR-FNX, "Contrary Warrior: Life & Times of Adam Fortunate Eagle." Ran a "View Upcoming" search on the title and got a hit on channel "*24-2." Soonest airing is on July 31st though, so set a recording for it and will see.

Both the XLSX format and the (very) old XLS format are provided today. I recently discovered that depending on the vintage of old reader used, the old format XLS version may lack important descriptive features such as shading and highlighting.

It is difficult to explain, for example, that all the MPEG4 records are shaded in blue, if the reader being used does not display shading.

Get ready, the old format XLS will be discontinued with the September, 2012, postings. If you are still running Excel '93 on your Windows 95 OS, you will be out of luck.
