Trouble getting esata drive recognized

1144 Views 18 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  missparker10
I have an HR20-700. I am using this enclosure:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182121

and this HD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136151

I can't get my dvr to recognize the external drive. I have tried numerous different
ways of unplugging, plugging in, powering off, rebooting, restarting, pretty much
anyway that has been used in a thread here. Whenever it reboots, it goes right to the internal drive.

Any ideas? How will I know when it finally recognizes the external? Does it go through that 'formatting' process before any other screen you see?

Thanks for any help

I'm not sure what's wrong with your links but when I hover over it it says it does not go to newegg.com and it doesn't open... Yes, it will go through the same screen as when you first turned on the receiver. My guess is either a bad esata cable or the drive isn't powered on (if you could have possibly missed that) just make sure you pull the plug on the receiver, plug in the hard drive and make sure it is powered on, attach the esata cable to both receiver and hard drive then plug in the receiver again and you should be good... Make sure you are using the esata cable and not usb. You could test the drive on your computer if you try all of what I've said and it still isn't working.
I am using the Seagate FAP and I had issues with the cable seating properly. I actually had to cut some of the plastic away from around the connectors on both ends. Here is the steps I used to get mine working.

HR20 unplugged
Plug in the external drive wait 30 secs or so.
Plug in the HR20
If it works you should see some sort of drive activity on the enclosure.
Once it is done booting, hopefully you will see 100% available.
Good Luck.

If none of this helps, might want to check your cable. Is your drive a fresh unformatted drive?

Your links seem fine, I was able to see both items.

Yep, drive was on. :) It was worth mentioning though, since sometimes the simplest things are the easiest to miss.

I am doing it exactly the way you have posted. Let's wait and see.....ok still the same thing. A couple of times I thought I heard the external drive whirring but I guess I made that up.

Yes, the drive is a brand new one, out of the box. I do notice that the cables don't seem to go all the way in. Maybe I will try what you tried to get them to seat properly.

its gotta be a cable issue... fix that and youll be good to go!

I tried trimming some of the plastic around the edges but it doesn't seem to have worked. Is it more the plastic at the top or side of the cable that can be an issue? The one in the back of the enclosure seemed more snug but the one going into the dvr is semi-loose. It can be wiggled a bit back and forth. I can even see some of the silver part when it sticks in, on the enclosure it seems to go all the way.

What are the best cables to get? Can someone recommend them?

Maybe you know this already but just in case you don't: the connectors at the end of the cable are not symmetrical. At first glance they look like they are, but closer inspection will show that they aren't. Each connector has a top and a bottom. If they don't go all the way in, you might have one or both of them upside-down. If you shave off plastic to make them fit, they might still be upside-down.

Hmm, well I didn't know that. Not exactly. I did sort of see that they look different on the top and bottom but I thought they wouldn't go in at all if they were upside down. I will look into this after my coffee. : )

Thanks for all the replies. :D

The links are a redirection to Newegg through ad server jdoqocy.com.
Ok, we hooked up the external drive to the computer. It would recognize the device but not the HDD. So we thought it might be the drive was bad. So we went out and bought a new HDD. Put it in the enclosure. No go. I couldn't believe we had gotten 2 dead drives so then we thought it might be the enclosure.

So we went out and bought the Antec MX-1 that everyone has been recommending. I personally would have gone with that one first but hubby ordered the parts.

Ok, so we put the original HDD in the new external. Computer couldn't see the HDD but did see the enclosure. Then we switched over to the 2nd HDD we bought and stuck that in the new enclosure. I think we can see it. It says unallocated. Should we format it to NTFS or something before we connect to the DVR or can it be done as is?

No need to hook anything up to the computer. Once the DVR sees the new HDD in your Antec enclosure, it formats it as necessary.

The trick is to remove power from the HR, hook up the external eSATA enclosure, power it up first, wait a few sec's for the drive to spin up, and only then restore power to the HR. Then, be patient for a couple minutes while it gets going.
I wanted to thank everyone for their help and to let you know how it all turned out.

Ok. so we thought it was the hard drives because when we put them in our PC, it wasn't there. Then we realized it was because we are running Vista and the drives had to have an update to be seen there. So it turns out, we 'could' actually get both drives to work in our PC.

Therefore, it had to be the enclosure and it was. We went out and got the Antec MX-1, put the original HDD in, hooked it up to the DVR and it worked like a charm! :dance01: I was so ecstatic. So now it works, and I have 100% available.

Again, thanks for the help.
Ok, now that I have the external drive working, my VOD disappeared. The dvr is still connected the way it was before. I don't get any of the
channels in the guide. I searched and saw someone else had a similar problem but that most users didn't. Now what did I do wrong?
And October is such a good month for movies. Since I had a new big HDD, I was going to download a bunch a horror flicks, get into the mood for Halloween.

This was from last night, are they still missing? I would guess they would have repopulated by now.

Just checked. They are still not there. I tried rebooting once this morning before I left for work. That didn't work. Any thoughts?

I'm assuming they are still on the dvr HDD itself, but I can't check at the moment. Recording Knight Rider for the hubby.:)
Have you checked that the DVR is still connected to the internet? You may need to run the network setup again.

The cable is definitely still plugged in. I never moved anything. But....maybe you're right. I will try the network setup again.

Ok, tried it. It says I am connected to the internet, no issues. Maybe I am just one of those unlucky few? Anyone else not getting their VOD with the esata?
VOD showed its pretty little face when I checked to see if they were there yet. Been checking all day. Yay, they're back.
