Tuner 1 771s more and more often... swap box?

My HR20-700 has been susceptible to the rain fade issue knocking out tuner 1, but now it will lose tuner 1 even in clear weather.

Test run during the fail period has tuner 1 and LNB output failed.

Resetting the receiver brings back tuner 1. Signal strength in the 80s and 90s on both tuners.

Per the DirecTV tech support, I swapped cables. Tuner 1 still fails. Tuner 2 signal still in the 80s and 90s.

DirecTV is sending me a new HR20-700 (at least that's what the CSR said. The email just says an HD DVR). after reading a few of the other threads, is this going to make a difference?

It might. Have you checked the actual LNB to see if maybe there is a crack that has allowed water to get inside and is actually affecting the LNB.

Looks ok.

The receiver is directly wired to the dish, so wouldn't a problem with an LNB at the dish move to the other tuner when I swapped the cables at the receiver?

It should. Could be the BBCs. Did you swap those when you swapped cables or did you leave them in the same place?

Left them as is, so they swapped as the cables were swapped.

Rules out BBCs. Ok looks like getting the new box is the answer
I had the same thing happen two weeks ago. They shipped a HR21 to replace the HR20-700 for $19.95 shipping. First CSR said that they had new software that would tell the warehouse I needed a refurb HR20 since I use the OTA tuners.
Right....... I got a HR21.

Next took a couple of calls to get an AM21. First CSR said $50 and she could not waive the fee, BUT I got $10 off per month for 6 months. Then she said the system would not let her place the order. At least the credit showed up on the account.

Next call the CSR said he would ship the AM21 for free with no shipping. It worked, got the HR21, AM21, and $10 off for 6 months.

BTW no more searching for signal so it was the HR20.
Box has left the Lewisberry/York, PA area as of ~5am. Scheduled to arrive today.

CSR I talked to yesterday morning said there was really no way to tell what model I'd receive, in spite of what I was told monday night.
I went through this same issue several months back. Resolution was to get another HR21-700. Problems went away until this week. They are back again and if history repeats itself, it will only get worse.

My uneducated take on this is that it has to do with recording multiple shows on multiple channels, often when both tuners are being used for recording. This has not been an issue over the summer months but now the the new TV season has started, the problem has returned. My guess is that this will also lead to blank recordings (which I have not had since the unit was replaced). Look for an "I told you so" message from me shortly. :(

Monday night's loss of tuner 1 was when 2 shows were getting ready to record at 8pm. No indication of trouble last night, but the recording of the Venture Bros. was blank. Signal on tuner 1 this morning was about 10% off of normal, tuner 2 was good, and test reported LNB output fail. System response was extremely sluggish. Another reset and back to normal. :nono:
New box just arrived about 20 minutes ago (first stop of the day for the FedEx driver, woot!).

It wasn't another HR20-700. It's an HR21-200. So I lose the local PBS channels that broadcast in HD. I called to get the AM-21 OTA box and got the same $10/mo off for 6 months that another poster did. Or at least I will. I have to activate the new receiver first before the order will be accepted by their system. I have the badge number of the girl I talked to earlier, and a note is on the account to complete processing of the order once the new receiver is activated.

Blasted thing decided to download the new software before I could complete the setup. Grr...
