Tuner Levels

I just had D* installed today and so far have been happy. Had a wonderful tech who did a great job getting everything set up for me.

I just started double checking my signal strenght and the levels on the transponders and for some reason on a couple of satellites the levels on Tuner 2 are about 20 points lower than Tuner 1. 99c, 103c & 119 are fine. But 101 and 110 are about 20 points lower. I can't figure out why. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a single HR21-100 installed. No other boxes in the house.

Ok, nevermind on this. In the time it took me to double check, type the message and then check again all the levels just equaled themselves out for some reason. Must of just been a weird glitch...
First swap cables, leave the bbc's connected. Check the signal strenght again, did signal levels stay the same for each tuner or switch. If they did not switch,, now swap the bbc's, check ss again did it switch tuners or stay the same. That will give an idea of if its a bbc, connector or cable issue or just the tuner itself
Ok, Its at it again. Here are my levels. I've just included a couple of transponders but they are all similar. Remeber all other satellites have levels that are within 1 or 2 of each other but just these 2 are way different.

101 - Tuner 1

try going into signal meters for those transponders.. the main sat screen is notorious for missing..
Third time someone's reported this on an HR21-100. If it were mine, I'd get it exchanged. Even by DirecTV's standards, 50's and 60's are too low for clear weather signal strengths on any 101 tp's which aren't spot beams (4, 12, 18, 20, 26 and 28), because you have minimal rain fade margin. So what you say is, "I have a 771 message right now on my screen, 'Searching for Signal on Sat In 2,' and my signal strengths on some satellites are in the 50' on tuner 2, but not tuner 1." You can rest assured you will be able to say that sooner or later, if not at the time of the actual conversation.

While i do have the same issue(I also had it awhile ago on my HR20-100) it hasnt caused an issue yet I would swap mine but dont want to take the chance of losing my black one

And i will add i am not 100% it is the Tuner, If i remove the BBC from Tuner 2 my levels match tuner one, but BBC attached they drop. However swapping cables and installing new BBC's yield the same result
I called this morning and ordered an AM21 and then got transferred over to tech. They are sending a tech out Tuesday morning to take a look at it. I'll let you know what happens.

Right. That's what they do. Same problem some HR20-100's have, only with them it was only the 110's. Also a Thomson receiver. There's some design/manufacturing/software (?) problem between tuner 2 and the BBC on some of these which has yet to be addressed. I have the problem on my HR21-100, but only with the 110.

Wierd thing is on my 101 the signal is only low for the first 12 TP or so, then everything is up. It also wasnt low to begin with, upon install it was fine
Installer came back out today and said that the guy that did it originally did the install wrong. According to him he placed the cables on alternating lines in the LNB instead of side by side and he said that this could cause the problem.

He also as a precautionary measure replaced the LNB. As of right now wife is stating its all clear and everything is the same now on both tuners so we'll see what it looks like over the next couple of days.
So how are your 101 and 110 signals on tuner 2 now?

I had this exact same thing about two weeks ago after tweaking the new 99c sat signals. Really strong signals (90+) everywhere but on first ten 101 TPs of tuner 2. Swapped the cables/bcc on back of HR20-100 around and used 7/16 open end to snug up the connector. Problem solved.

I think the problem is the crappy connectors used on the bbc. It like only 2/3 the depth of a normal connector and the stinger is trimmed flush, i.e. really short. When putting them on you only get a grip of two or so threads at most. It's important to use a wrench to snug it on fully to maximize connection, not trust your fingertips.

I've got an extra set that I replaced the connectors because one of then couldn't even grip the first turn of the threads. Seems to work okay. Don't know if the length of the pigtail has any adverse effect electrically, but I can't tell if it does.

Signal strength on 101 is 96% on Tuner 1 and 95% on Tuner 2 and 110 is 83% on Tunder 1 and 82% on Tuner 2. The individual transponders are running almost the same.

Well finally started getting a 771 on Tuner 2. Really pissed, i didnt want to lose the black box if they send me a HR20.
I Just swapped my HR21-100 for a -700. It is a night and day difference on the signal levels. Now Tuner 1 and 2 are within 1% of eachother.:)

I wish i knew i would get a HR21-700
I would say that you have a really good chance at getting a HR21-xx. I have read on here that the H20-xx models are hard to get! But it is always a gamble!!!

Yesterday my installer stated that all they are getting now is the HR21-xx. He has not seen a HR20-xx for quite some time.
