Long-time Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, who died Monday from brain injuries, will be remembered in a private funeral service for family members and close friends at 11 a.m. today at St. Martin of Tours Church in Brentwood. Cardinal Roger Mahony will preside.
The service will be televised by KCAL/9 and Fox Sports Net and broadcast by KSPN/1110.
The public can pay tribute to Hearn today at Staples Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests can view Hearn's broadcast position and sign a message book. Free parking will be available at lots 3, 5 and 7. Enter via the Star Plaza entrance on 11th Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the USC Annenberg Chick Hearn Fund, USC Annenberg School for Communications, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0281.
The Lakers have not yet begun to search for a new play-by-play announcer for their TV or radio broadcasts, according to spokesman Bob Steiner. The team has not decided if it will discontinue the use of a simulcast, where one broadcaster handles duties for TV and radio simultaneously, as did Hearn.
"It's not necessarily the end of simulcast," Steiner said. "The decision hasn't been made yet, and it will depend on who will take over. That decision will be made at the highest level of the Lakers organization."
