You can use RF for both receivers.

If you want to control them both with one remote, one of the receivers will have to be set as AV1 or AV2.

If, however, you use separate remotes for each, then the remotes can both be set to the DirecTV position on their respective remote. When you set a receiver to RF, it is tied to a remote by the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID.

See this post for specific tips or search for posts by Edmund (He is the acknowledged remote master for DIRECTV.)

one remote in RF can/does control three DirecTV receivers. DTV, AV1, & AV2. I needed to use the 0003 code under the AV programing, but it works fine for my HR20, HR21, & H21.
Just to clarify what VOS is saying, before you can program the remote's AV1 or AV2 mode for RF control of a D* receiver, you first need to program that device mode on the remote for IR control of a D* receiver. VOS used the secondary HR2x code "00003", but you can also use "00001" or even "00002". To do this, slide the switch to the AV1 or AV2 mode as desired, then press MUTE + SELECT and dial "00001" for H2x/HR2x primary, "00002" for H2x secondary, or "00003" for HR2x secondary. Once you do this, you can then program it for RF control.

Thanks for posting "more". Back when I did it, "only" 0003 worked for me. there are four codes listed: 00001, 00002, 00003, 00004. "1 & 3" were common, and others needed "2". I think only "Edmund" knows the real "scoop".

I’m not sure what devices use it, but 00004 is a D* device code because (1) you get two blinks of the light when you set one of the remote devices modes to use it and that means it’s a valid code and (2) after setting one of the device modes to it, it will then accept and RF code. I know that 00001 is the primary (or default) code for all receivers, 00002 is the “secondary” code for the H2x and 00003 is the secondary code for the HR2x. Note that the remote’s device mode (D*, AV1, AV2) is independent of the codes used. For example, you could set the remote’s D* mode to control an H2x in secondary mode using code 00002 and AV1 to control an HR2x in primary mode using code 00001 and AV2 to control another HR2x in secondary mode using code 00003 (or any other combination of those three receivers and remote modes).

You're getting "good at this" [but] I have a HR21 on DTV, a HR20 on AV1 & a H21 on AV2, I used 00003 for AV1 programing and either the same or it didn't want one for AV2.

One unit will have to be IR.
As others have pointed out, you are incorrect, yet again

RF works just fine on multiple HRs. I have two set up that way with a single remote in my living room.

Great timing on this thread anyway. I am moving #2 into the main room tomorrow and was going to ask about the procedure then.
