Two new HR24's, which old DVR's to keep?

So, I made my annual call to D* about getting Sunday Ticket for free, which they gave me again, and the CSR asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I told him that some of my DVR's are getting a little long in the tooth and operating a little slowly and I asked if he could upgrade me.

D* came out last summer and put in a new dish for me with MVR, which I'm absolutely loving, and has cut down on recording the same stuff on all four of my DVR's.

Anyway, the CSR told me that if re-upped for another 2yrs he could upgrade two of my existing DVR's for HR24's. Here's what I have:

HR20-100
HR20-700 (had an external 2TB drive, which just failed and was replaced under warranty from Western Digital)
HR21-100
HR21-700 (upgraded with a 1TB drive internally)

Which two should I swap out? I'm thinking the two HR2x-100's, since I think the HR20-700 is better than the HR21-100, correct? I'll be keeping the HR21-700 around because of the upgrade that I did, and whichever of the other 3 that I keep, I'll be doing a 2TB internal upgrade on (with that replacement drive that WD just sent me in the mail).

I'd also prefer the HR20-700 due to the ability to have OTA connected to it without an additional cost for that adapter, but it is an older DVR and seems slower compared to the HR21-100.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Jon

First I'd question your CSR saying he can get you HR24's. Unless something has changed in the last few days I've always been told that CSR's can't specify which HR2x you get, could be a HR24, could be a HR20.

As to what I'd keep, if the HR20 is working I'd keep if over a HR21 since the hard drive size is the same.

The retention CSR specifically pointed out that I had 4 HD DVR's on the account (and that's it) and that he could upgrade two of them.

At first he recommended the HR34, at $99 each, but I told him that I have no use for recording 5 shows at one location since I can do 8 at once with my current setup and share all of them between each other. He agreed and told me that he could swap out two of my older HD DVR's for HR24's (and specifically mentioned that model).

If the installer comes out with anything other than HR24's, that would be pointless since I already have HD DVR's. I think when you're going from a non HD DVR into one (as a free upgrade) that's probably when you have to take whatever they give you, but in this case it's specific because I already have four of them and anything other than a HR24 (at a minimum) would be a lateral move and something I'm not interested in renewing a contract for.

The size of the hard drive of the HR20-700 vs HR21-100 isn't a concern, since whichever one I keep is going to get a new 2TD drive inside of it.

I'm just thinking from a speed/software aspect is the HR21 better than the older HR20?

Nope, sounds like this CSR was just talking out of his behind.

First he said he could get you two HR34s, that is a lie. DirecTV has a hard limit on one HR34 per account. It has even gone as far as deactivating the second HR34 on some accounts if they find that the person had activated a second one before they came up with that rule. They have told those people to return the second HR34 or be faced with a non-return fee, and they did not refunt the $400 that some of them paid to get the second one through an online retailer like SolidSignal (you have never been able to get 2 HR34s from DirecTV).

The thing about giving you HR24 as an upgrade is a lie as well. He has no way to guarantee that you get HR24s. He just places an order for 2 new HD-DVRs and might put a note on the order to give you HR24s, but the person in the warehouse who ships them out does not pay attention to those notes, he will just ship you whatever HD-DVR he picks up off the pile.

As far as your question though, most on here feel that the HR24 is the fastest HD-DVR, followed by the HR20, and then the HR21, HR22, and HR23 are all about even in third place. The HR22 has 2 seperate processors that seem to be a bit faster than the single processor in the HR21, HR22, HR23. The HR24 has a newer single processor that is faster.

A bit off topic, but if this is true, what a horrible business practice. Surely, the management team is smarter than that?

Good luck with that - it is a total crap-shoot on what you get. DirecTV doesn't consider an HR24 as an 'upgrade' to anything other than standard (non-dvr) HD receivers or any SD receiver. The guy you talked obviously had no idea what he was talking about. DirecTV considers HR20/21/22/23/24s to be equal - of course they are not but reality doesn't seem to be something DirecTV is interested in.

Hopefully you'll get lucky and the installer will only have HR24s... Fingers crossed for you...

The HR20s are faster than HR21/22/23s unless DirecTV engineers screw it up. Even when they screw them up they usually fix them within a few months...
Remember that the new receivers would be leased boxes and it's against the TOS to open the box to replace the hard drive, you might want to consider going external.
Excellent knowledge and information guys, thank you.

I'll keep the HR20-700 then and throw the 2TB drive back in there.

If the installer shows up with something other than a HR24's for me, I'll send him away and call D* and tell them to NOT renew my contract.

I'll update on Thursday after he shows up, thanks again!

Yes, I'm aware. I'm upgrading my old boxes though, not the two new one's they are bringing Thursday (again, assuming they're actually HR24's).

After having my last 2TB drive die in only 18 months (and it got really really slow at the end), I'll be upgrading internally this time (actually, I already did that when the new drive came in the mail on Friday, but took it back out and put the 320GB one back since I'm doing this upgrade with D*).
The installer called me this morning to get an idea on what I was having done (since the CSR had to code it as a "movers install" with two HD DVR upgrades on the free order.

Anyway, once I mentioned to him the equipment that I had, and that I was upgrading two older units to HR24's he stopped me to say that he only had HR23's with him. I told him that wouldn't really do me any good and he was super nice and agreed but said he would call his manager to have him locate two HR24's for me. He just called back and said they had one in the warehouse and the manager is running around trying to find another for me, checking out their trucks in the field. He said, worst case, he brings them both by in the morning (they get a new truck shipment overnight) or he might find a second one for me before the afternoon is over.

I've decided to dump the HR20-100 and HR21-100, but the HR21-100 I had been using in the upstairs master bedroom with it's dual ethernet ports to drive a 2nd wireless router to extend my wifi signal from the basement. I'll lose that with the HR24 in that location, or I could move the HR21-700 I'm keeping (but have to reprogram remotes, which is a pain). Alternatively, I could use the splitter that is being used for that HR20-100 and split the signal to a new HR24, using the 2nd unused coax to connect to a DECA, then a cat-5 cable to my wireless router. But that's a conversation for another thread...

My opinion is that the three 24 models are ranked: HR24-500 for it's speed and dependability and it is very easy to work on if you own it, second would be the 24-200 and then the 24-100. After them, the 20-700 would be my choice if you can find one that works properly. The rest of them? Well, I don't have any of them and won't have any of them. The best of the 21 series was the 21-700 and I sent them back a couple years ago.

Another opinion: D* should have refined the 20-700 and then introduced the 24s and 34. The series 21 (including the 22s and the 23) should have never been made. Just my opinion.

But then don't some people have issues with the HR24-500 due to the different colorspace?

Ya got me on that one! What does that mean? I see no difference in PQ on any of my HRs. If there is an issue perhaps the plasmas I have don't show that issue.

Rich
Just to follow up, they did in fact get me the two HR24 upgrades that I requested and installed them last week. I put the 2TB drive back with the HR20-700, but installed it internally this time.
