Two questions: Fast Forwarding & Dual Tuner w / live TV

956 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mtnagel
First question, is there a way to set it so when you are done FF'ding through commericals it will zip back a few seconds? Tivo did this, it was nice. Now I have to manually rewind to get back to the resume portion of the show because I always overshoot a few seconds. Is there a setting I'm missing?

Second question, since this has dual tuners, when in live TV can I have two stations recording the 90min of live TV at the same time? Seems like I cannot lock a channel in to do this. If I change the channel it resets the recorder to 0. Again, hate to say it but Tivo was great at this, I lock into two channels and I could swap between two shows and have them both on a live TV record. I could even pause one channel and go to the other, come back to the paused station, etc. I haven't found a way to do this with the HR20.

I'm guessing these may be Tivo patented features?

Thanks,

Doug

It can't do it the way Tivo used to.

A little trick is to hit the Skip Back button instead of Play when you see your show come back on. You might have to press it two your three times, but it usually works pretty good.

I don't think we can do the other thing yet.

Yeah it's all patents and brain-farts.
You've keyed in on some major topics of discussion on this board.

Do a search for "Dual Live Buffers" or DLB to see where we all "stand" on this issue.

As for the skip back, the consensus has been that TIVO does in fact have this feature patented. There are some threads on this as well. Try searching "trick play" to get more info on that.

Welcome to the board.

Thanks, I did search but didn't use the correct lingo. This helps, a lot.

It is a hard DVR to get used to, especially since my brain has been "Tivoized" over the last few years.

I agree and TiVo has such an intuitive interface. That said, once you get used to it, it's really not bad, and there are some cool features that TiVo just doesn't have. I have only had mine for a couple of weeks (and one week of downtime due to a painting project), but once I worked out some of the difference, I like it. I do miss the two tuner buffering a lot more than I would have thought. But as long as it records as it should, I won't complain too much. As soon as it skips shows, then I'll be the first in line complaining. (luckily I have a TiVo on one of my other TVs, not HD, but if this thing misses a recording, I have backup)

Welcome Dugmar. I too was a tivo addict nd had a hard time converting. But as i have said on other posts, i now prefer this unit with its quick recording, one touch seasons pass, one line guide (blue key), etc.

Caveat: I will not be 100% converted until we have dual live buffers so i can watch two games live flipping back and forth. Once that is incorporated, and with a little more stability, this hr20 will actually make me never say tivo again.

I heard that dual live buffers would not be implemented due to a patent by Tivo. Hopefully that's no true. Does anyone know what Directv's plans are for dual live buffers.

lman - There are many opinions on this.

Search on "Dual Live Buffers" and/or "DLB" to get the low-down.
If dual live buffers is a Tivo patent then a LOT of DVR providers are breaking the law.

Just go to one channel, hit record, go to the other channel, hit record. Then swap back and forth between the two. I know it's not the same but it sorta works.

Now you started something :D

Dugmar, you might want to check out my dual buffer workaround thread, I will say it's not how everyone wants to use DLB, so be forewarned. It works for me, but it may not for you. And now that the football season is over, I don't even care, but I do know that a lot of people want it, so I still want D* to implement it.

Yeah, but a lot of them also have the supposedly tivo patented auto correction (jump back after FF'ing) too.
