Anyway I'm going to correct the error of his ways but do you have any idea what DTV will do when we call to swap his H23 for a HR21? Any idea of the cost difference? He's been a DTV customer for ever and they didn't do him any favors on the upgrade to HD. He ordered 2 H23 and a 5lnb with installation and it cost him $230. Seemed kinda high since he didn't get a DVR.

Well the only way to know is to call them. The HR21 is currently 199 but you might be able to negotiate that down. How long ago did he get the recivers? That may impact greatly what they do as well.

Make sure he's aware of the monthly fee to comes along with having a DVR....

Sounds like he paid full price. Was he under a commitment (you said "he's been a DTV customer forever")? He should have "negotiated" an upgrade to HD. And if that didn't work, DISH has a load of free HD stuff (including a HD DVR) for new customers. I hate to say this since I've been a loyal DTV customer for 8 years, but you know the saying: "Money talks and bull---- walks".

I myself seriously thought about switching to dish at one point but then dish blew it when they got rid of the voom channels. I hope verizon fios picks up the voom channels someday.

I really didn't care about the voom channels. I do miss their REAL dvr functionality though!

This was my first upgrade provided by D* (few years back I bought my own TS360)
Bottom line: $40 for the HR21 (I paid the shipping and the tax), AM21 for $27
