A bracket is a good idea, but you could use fender washers instead.

I'm actually using fender washers right now but they are buckling and getting sucked into the wood from being tghtened down...

The problem is that there are a couple of different mast feet, and they don't have the same hole spacing. That's why the pictured bracket has several sets of holes (I know the person who makes that mount, BTW.) Since you're in Sac, you should just go buy a plate from Universal Satellite Accessories. www.universalsat.net
