I called to cancel sunday ticket this year. I found most of the match ups I was interested in I could get on the NFL network, MNF, and the network double headers. I've had it since I first subscribed to DTV many years ago.

Anyway, they gave me another HD-DVR if I would stay subscribed to the Sunday ticket. SOLD! I did not even ask for it, anyway, I loved the gesture and it worked, they kept me with the sunday ticket for another year.....

Just thought I'd report... :D

That is a leased DVR that the current promotion gives free to new customers. So they got you to spend the cost of NFL by giving you nothing. You will have to return the DVR if you terminate so their only cost may be shipping.

And I'd almost bet my house that he is locked into a two year contract as soon as he activates it.

They did not give him nothing. They gave him a deal that only new customers get. Real nicely cynical there. He would have had to pay for the DVR now he doesn't have to. It was worth it to him and he is happy. Do you have to pee in his oatmeal just because you don't find value in it?

Man talk about finding problems.

Are you for real? 2 year commiment? who cares. I've been here since 95, I'm not leaving anytime soon. :hurah:

Let's see, $269 for NFLST (Superfan was included this year)

Minus the cost of the HD DVR (ok its LEASED, big deal, what the heck can I do with it not on DTV? seriously...who cares) $199

Gives me the ticket for $70 this year (including superfan), and you can find a problem with that? I wanted to get another HD DVR anyway, and offering it to me free just to keep the ticket for a season is a good deal. Technically nothing is holding me to keeping the ticket, but all the same its a nice gesture to a current customer.

If I really want to piss and moan about lease fees and how I 'have' to return the equipment, then I really should not be a customer of DTV in the first place. It's my choice to pay the pro rated termination fee and keep the receiver, but again, its irrelevant to me, I'm not leaving for less.

anyway back to the point, it was an unexpected surprise.

I had the same opinion as you with regards to not worrying about the commitment because I have no intentions of leaving D*. However, I am very conscious of it now for several reasons. The primary issue is that once I was under a commitment, D* seemed to not treat me as well. I guess they know they "have me", so there is no incentive for them to give me good service. Another reason is that if some nice new equipment comes out, I may not even be able to get it at all. For example, let's say that MRV finally appears, but it only works with the "new" model receivers (say the mystical "HR23"). So, now I am stuck without a feature that is very important to me until my commitment expires to where D* will allow me to upgrade. Finally, with all the things going on with HDCP and DRM, it is very likely that we will soon have issues recording some of our favorite programs. If that happens, and I'm under a commitment, I have no leverage.

I have always been able to upgrade my receivers any time I want to pay the upgrade fee. And DRM will be there with all providers.

I tried to add a 3rd HR2x and the CSR told me I did not qualify for the $199 price and that I would have to pay $299 (this was just a few months back, after the "price drop"). I just do not like being locked into a one-sided contract where the service provider can so whatever they please, like screw up my perfectly good HDMI connection as they "test" DRM, and go up on my rates and I can do nothing about it.

You could always go to a brick and mortar and pick up for the $199 or I think Costco has them for a bit less. I guess either way you have the commitment, but it is what it is. :)

That is some interesting math.

I might be wrong here, maybe not, let me know. You didn't want to pay the $269. So they gave you a free box. In return you still paid the $269, plus box mirror fees and a DVR fee, approx $12 more per month, costing you $413 than you would have paid had you just canceled NFL Sunday ticket?

Also, with a 2 year commitment, you'll be locked in to the $12 / month for another year. Assuming you cancel NFL ST next year, that's another $144 next year totalling $557 that you paid them to NOT save $269 by canceling NFL Sunday Ticket.

Or maybe I am wrong and they waived all fees associated with the box too, and then you're golden. Otherwise, their deal cost you more $$, and your conclusion that you got NFLST for $70 is incorrect, especially since that waved $199 doesn't buy you anything except the right to pay lease fees on it and eventually you'll have to return it anyway. Pretty steep price for a free rental. Kind of like Hertz giving you an Escalade for the price of a Ford Focus (But you have to rent it for 2 years).

Your math is wrong. Per his post that you quoted, they gave him another HDDVR. So he won't be paying anything extra for the DVR service on this receiver. If he is replacing another active receiver with this HDDVR, he won't be paying anything extra at all (per month).

If you decide not to pay for a $269 package next year, it adds another $144 to the total that you are paying??? Now that is some interesting math.

Leased fee vs additional receiver fee. That horse has been beat to death around here so many times that I'm not going to comment on it, other than saying that you would pay the additional $5 a month for each extra receiver you have whether or not you own the receiver. As I said earlier, he won't be paying this extra fee if the HDDVR is replacing a receiver that he currently has activated. If it will be an additional receiver, it will cost only $5 extra per month. However, he posted that he was planning to get another HDDVR anyway, so he would have had to pay that fee even if he hadn't gotten the deal.

He already has an HD-DVR so he is already paying the DVR fee (no new fee there), the additional receiver or lease fee (no new fee there), and the HD fee (no new fee there either). So yes, your math is wrong.

Sorry, I should have read further before I replied. I see you already addressed this issue with the same comments I made...

So the DVR fee is per household, not per STB? That's good to know.

There will be a mirroring fee, right?... unless he's returning another box, so.... if that's the case, then his bill stays exactly the same.. he still has to dish out the $$ for NFL ST... But.... If he cancels it next year, then it will start to be a profitable move, saving the $$$ and getting the HDDVR for no extra cost.

Cool. I retract my faulty math, I probably would have accepted the deal too. Good move.

I think DirecTV had a program to get everyone under a commitment some time back, since I didn't have one and got an email last July offering a FREE DVR upgrade (SD), or a bunch of free PPV movies, or $60 off my bill spread out over a bunch of months. The best value was the DVR, but of course it came with a 2 year commitment. Big deal. I took it anyway. Then later I spotted a special code on this system that could be used to get a SECOND DVR for free, so what the heck? Then I ended up with a THIRD DVR, also "free". I think I have a programming commitment until I'm 90 years old. :D :D :D

Hopefully everyone knows this, but the longest a comittment can be is two years.

It resets to two years when you upgrade...it does not add two years unless you are not under a committment now.
