Updates download via what medium?

Also, judging from the intense interest in updates, is there a consensus that problems are software related and the hardware is either not at fault or any faults can be worked around via software tweaking?

The HR20 get's all of it's data, video, and software updates via the SAT stream.

As for the vast majority of the issues...
IMHO... 99%+ of the issues reported are software related
