Is updating the H20 the same as on the HR20? 2,4,6,8,0? I've tried that numerous times on this H20, and it never goes to the update screen.

Yes it is the same.

Do you have it set to RF or IR? When I had my H20's I had a problem a lot of times trying to do it when it was set to RF?

Also why are you trying to update it?

What software version do you have?

Did you just connect it? If so it should restart after running a little while and download the newest software.

If you have it set to use one of the alternate IR codes with AV1 or AV2 you need to switch it back to the default Directv (switch at the top of the remote) when you enter the 02468. At that point in the boot process it only understands the default remote code which the switch setting will give you. After the download begins just switch the remote back to the switch setting you were using.

On the H20 you have to wait until the LEDs by the menu button blink, not just the power button LED. If you enter it too early it won't take but if you start entering and finish it when the "hello" screen comes up it usually takes just fine.

I've found that I can't update my H20-600 with RF at all, I've got to use my IR remote for it.
