Hello guys, just curious about my options for an upgrade.

My programming

AT250 $69.99
HD box $7
Dvr service $6
Protection plan $7
HD for Life $0
Ota for hd locals $0
External hard drive on 211k running L551 software

Equipment

1) 211k (since 2008)
1) 510d (since 2004)
1) 1000.2 dish (since 2008) forced change by dish

I consulted a csr via IM yesterday about upgrading the 510d to a 211k and he said I was required to have their installer install free of charge if i was willing to agree to another 24 month sign your life away agreement. Given my limited time (hvac co owner) this was unacceptable so I declined. I preferred Dish to mail me the box and I would install, run check switch ect...

The more I think about it the more I think I may just need to do a major upgrade. I'm happy with the 211k and have seen other family members get these expensive Dvr boxes that seem to malfunction with great regularity. Naturally I want to keep my costs down and do what makes the most sense. If I upgrade at all...will I lose the hd for life?

I use the sd box in my bedroom...it is rarely used as a dvr. I only watch tv in there when I'm getting ready for work in the mornings.

Sorry to be long winded but I wanted to give some back ground on my situation in hopes that you guys can steer me in the right direction. I have been with dish since the late 90's and don't have any major aspirations for moving to direct.

I assume the OTA $0 is the old option where you saved $5 by not getting the guide information for locals if you had a antenna connected. This is no longer available. Any change to you account will drop it and you will be charge $5 for OTA and get guide info. This happened to me last November when I had my roof replaced and had to get the Protection Plan to avoid the $95 service call fee. Wasn't advised and noticed on my next bill the $5 increase for locals.

There is no charge for having OTA, the current package rate includes sat supplied locals. If you were grandfathered without subscription to you locals, any change to your programing will update the package to include them increasing the package by $5. Having locals on you subscription will give you guide info for your OTA.

If you lose the 510d box for the 211, then you would lose the $6 DVR fee. That would be a smart move if you lower costs. You should be able to add an external hard drive without any additional costs if you already paid the one-time $40 fee for the first 211 for The DVR integration. You'll just need another external hard drive.

Replace 510 with 211 save $6 DVR fee/ drop the protection plan save $7. The HD receiver fee is just the second receiver fee of $7 so that won't change. When DISH raised the price on the protection plan they eliminated the requirement for 5 mo. of service so they are back to add it when you need it and drop it after repair is completed. So upgrading to the 211 as a replacement for 510 could save $13/mo. and if you don't need a DVR in the bedroom you don't need to buy another hard drive.

Which means you have your local via sat, that should not change that charge on your subscription. Replacing you 510 with a 211 should eliminate your $6 dvr fee. You may want to check the upgrade fee on the reciever, Dish has been taking the 5xx receivers off service and may upgrade the receiver at no fee. Another 211 would be good for you as it would save you the dvr fee and you can add another EHD without any charge since you already have that on your account. You can also switch any EHD between both 211's if you go that route.

The 2 year contract isnt for the tech to install it with no charge, its so that you dont have to purchase the receiver.

This is the direction I was headed in...

I don't care about getting a Hopper/Joey system...I'm fine with my 211k with external hard drive although I'd like to look at getting a bigger hard drive than the one I currently have. Not sure what the limits are now but when I first got that thing Dish was limited to one platter drives up to like 750gb.

I'm curious about the lack of no option to install myself? Is there a technical reason behind that?

To answer this part publicly, the OP had a western arc install, in an Eastern arc DMA, which is why the install was required. The tech will install an EA dish so that the OP can get his HD locals
