I'm looking at the upgrade options on DISH'n It Up, as I have a 510, with the errors that seem to be common, and a 311 reciever.
I know that installation will be required, since they will have to replace the LNB.
I was looking at SD only, don't have any HD sets

I'm seeing:
Enhanced DVR Receiver
for additional hours of recording space
$50 Shipped
$100 Installed
(what's enhanced really mean? 625 appears to have little difference from the 510 except the dual tuners, it has the same record time)

also seeing:
HD DVR
Two Rooms of Service

Award Winning!
High Definition DVR Receiver
$100 Installed

Enhanced High Definition DVR Receiver
$125 Installed

so, 622 for same price as 625, or 722 for 25 more?

yes I'd have to pay $7 a month for having an hd box without programming, but this would get me more recording time, maybe less bugs, external hard drive capability, ethernet connection(I've always had problems with the telephones when a receiver is connected, caller ID breaks on phones etc.) and for the future, HD and archos video player possibilities.
I'm already paying 5 extra per month, that would be removed with getting any of these dual tuners.

also, only difference on 722 vs 622 is 350/55 and 200/30 record time right?

tell me if I'm wrong on anything here please.

You don't look to be wrong. 625/622/722 Dual output DVR would save you the $5/month for the Addl Rec fee and allow the room(s) seeing the 311 receiver to instead pick from recordings on the dual output DVR. There is some downside to that in that the "normal" default is for Dual mode will be to have recordings default to TV2 ("where the 311 was") which prevents that room from channel surfing during the recording. It could watch anything already recorded while it records something new.

The 622/722 would give you a 3rd tuner if you have OTA reception. Rather than pay the $7 for HD Enable fee, you might really want to pay the $10 for HD Essentials. It is another $3/month, but even with a SD TV, there is a very apparent difference between say ESPN HD and ESPN SD. There is some programming you would get (like HDNet) that doesn't have a SD counterpart. If you found it wasn't worth the extra $3, you could pay the $7 HD Enable fee instead.

If either the 510 or 311 is owned, you might keep it active when you get the two output DVR (SD or HD) so that cabling is there to support 2 receivers. You can then deactivate the owned 510/311 to save the $5/month but keep it to re-activate if you find the coax TV2 to be less clear than the current 311, or TV2 being the default recording gets in your way.

If you got a 625 to REPLACE both receivers, there wouldn't NEED to be any LNB/dish replacement - just a 2nd coax from the dish to the dual output 625. Even then, the installer might choose to change the LNB so the dual tuner only needed a single coax.

Afterthought: If you really only want SD and are willing to run your own coax, you MIGHT consider purchase of a 942. It has a 250 GB drive and doesn't have the $7 HD Enable fee. I've not had difficulty activating and deactivating a 942 on my own or other people's accounts, but that might change 1-Aug, dunno.

The 510 has 120 GB drive doesn't it? That is the same as a 522, but doesn't a 625 have a 250 GB, like the 942? If you don't have OTA, the 942 wouldn't have much advantage over the 625 - neither would have the $7 fee. But the 622's 320GB drive gives a little more, and a 722 a lot more.

the 510 records about 100 hours, which is what's stated for the 625, OTA reception here is bad enough to not be worth bothering with, and yes, I was thinking I could just go with the $10 HD package for that reason. The 510 was leased, then dish said it is owned, the 311 is owned.
Looking at, compared to my current bill:
pay 100, save 5 per month with 625
pay 100, pay 2 more per month 622 no HD programming
pay 100, pay 5 more per month 622 HD essentials
pay 125 with the same 2 options on 722

tired of problems on 510, occasional reboots, loss of timers etc. definitely not a heat issue, as it's suspended on shelf brackets, probably has more air circulation than anything but adding fans to it. 3 inches clearance above and behind it, 10 inches right, wide open on left and front, and 6 inches below it.

Probably it's just old, and the hard drive is past it's rated life. That or software bugs.

I've never had a 522/625, so I have to depend on EKB here.
http://ekb.dbstalk.com/rcvrcompare.htm
and look in DVR522 / DVR625 column for
Internal hard drive for TV pause and PTV = 120GB/ 250GB

May not match what you see at http://tech.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/content/tech/receiver/622.shtml, but I usually believe Charles more than the Daryls. Late in 2007, there was a firmware update that allowed the 625 to use some of the extra drive space for recordings. It didn't double it - I *think* it was 150 hours instead of 100. You might have to do something when there are NO recordings to get the extra space available to the end user. They don't go back and update the User Guide and literature. A 942 lists 180 hours from a 250 GB drive (doesn't support VOD stuff). The "Enhanced" part of the 625 is more than just the extra hours, but it does support more than a 510/522. Someone with a 625 would have to help there.

There is a big push for people to upgrade their 942 to 622/722 by 1-Aug and I thought people might be willing to sell their 942 for less than your starting $100 (DISH will give them $10 for it!). Your labor on coax with that route, and unknown issues with 942 after 1-Aug.

It was from 100 to 150 hours on the 625. That's the big difference now between the 522 and the 625. The way to get the 150 hours on your 625 NOW, (if you haven't done it already) is to delete all your recordings and all of your timers and then do a manual software update. (That's at least what I was told by mgm't) I have never actually deleted everything to find out for sure if you have to delete the timers as well to get more hours.

I'm going to be waiting a bit anyway I think, and now with the apparent discontinuing of 625, that might be why the 622 comes up for the same price. I'll keep looking at the pricing though, as I suspect it may change August 1.

I have AT250, and am seeing conflicting channel lists for what HD Essentials/GoldHD includes. What I'd want to know, is what channels are in it that have no SD equivalents.
HDnet is the only one that's listed everywhere.
also seeing HD Theater, MHD on the learn- Dish HD page
is this right, 3 channels?
and is it changing at all august 1? adding or removing channels that don't have a SD equivalent?
Several places on the site they list channels, they just list all the HD channels, and don't distinguish the ones in the essentials pack
