I currently have an R-15 and would like to upgrade to the HR-20. I don't need multiple DVRs. Is there an upgrade path that would allow me to "trade up" my R-15 or should I just buy the HR-20 and deactivate the R-15?

If you got your R15 after last March 1, it is leased and goes back to DirecTV regardless (if you deactivate it). If you got it before last March, you own it.

In either case, you would need to talk to DirecTV to see what kind of deal, if any, you can get. I would order the HR20 from them, that way it will include the new dish and any required wiring. If you just go buy one, you are then responsible for the new dish and installation.

No, you can get the receiver from Best Buy, etc., and call Directv to schedule a free dish and installation.

Ha! I am a sucker then. They charge $299 from their web site. When they call me to set up my "priority registration" I will bring this up. Thank you for pointing that out! :)

The Dish Network ViP622 receiver lease entry fee is $199. The HR20 drive-off fee is indeed $299.

There is an up-front cost (normally $299) for an HR20, AND there is a monthly lease fee (for the second and subsequent receiver or dvr on your account), AND there is a monthly DVR fee per account (not dvr, waived if you have total choice premier).

That is such a ripoff. So you have to pay $299 and then you don't even own the box? At least with cable they just give you the box and you pay a monthly fee.

$299 to lease equipment, plus a two year committment. Who, in their right mind, would sign up as a new customer with this "deal"? :eek2: :nono2: :nono: :nono2: :eek2:

People who can't see Dish's HD satellites (61.5 or 129) but can see all the DirecTV satellites.

Not true. I've always gotten my receivers outside D* and it never mattered. Both of my HR20 were installed at no cost to me.

It is very possible if he calls D* they will make him an attractive offer, if he is willing to accept programming credits as an incentive.

And I'm pretty sure at either Circuit City or Best Buy, in the store, there is a display stating you pay $299, but get a $100 rebate. Maybe that is for new customers, I don't know.

If your a A, A-, B+,B, B-, C+,C,C-,D+,D,D- or F then forget it you pay full fare... unless your an A++ then you don't:hurah:

High school graduates don't get any perks, only college level get perks and can be A++.

If you pucker up well enough the above may not apply.

I signed up on the HR-20 priority waiting list on directv.com. It states that I can exchange my existing DVR and pay only $200 for the HR-20. Works for me.
Does that include NON-HD DVRs? I have a SD Tivo (whatever the last SD Tivo model that came out) and if I could exchange it for $200, then that's not too horrible.
