I finally took the hit and called in to upgrade my system to HD this afternoon. I have been a customer on autopay since 2001 with 5 owned Hughes SD receivers. I am getting one DVR and three HD receivers. Here is a list of what I ordered today with install on Aug 1st. I have a few questions before they show up to do the install. I want to keep one or more of my old owned receivers active so I can turn it on and off as I need it. Right now it is active and the CSR said I had to switch it out with a new SD receiver because of the new dish. What I want to do is keep the old dish up and run one or more of the owned receivers off of the old dish. Can I do this? I don't have a problem with two dishes on the back of my house. Is there anything else I need to ask when the tech comes for the install? I asked them to have the tech call me before he comes so I can ask for the latest receivers. I know there is no guarantee but I will have to cancel if they try to give me an old DVR

Thanks

Well, as far as the installer is concerned, the answer is no.

BUT, nothing stops you from doing it yourself. Here is what you want to do.
1. When the old receivers are deactivated, make sure you retain possession of them. They should all be owned, so you should have no problem doing that.
2. Ask the installer to leave the old dish in place. The new dish requires a different base plate and mounting shaft, so he can't reuse any part of the old dish installation. He should be okay with that, it saves him work. Also make sure he leaves the old coax in place.
3. Have him install the new dish and equipment (including new coax from the dish), and get everything new set up and running the way he wants to do it. This will not include any of your old receivers.
4. When he leaves, hook up your old receiver(s) to the old dish and you are good to go.

Thanks, that was what I was planning to do and I couldn't think of any reason that it wouldn't work. I have cables run for all the spots now so he can just reuse the cables for the new receivers.

I have been reading that some of the HR24 receivers are running slow, Are they all that way or just some. I'm a channel flipper so it would drive me crazy if it took several seconds to change from channel to channel.

This could be a potential problem for you. The problem isn't so much that the receiver is slow, it is that changing channels often results in switching to a different satellite / transponder / polarity which does take a second or two. You will find some channel changes faster than others depending on exactly what system changes are involved. It should not take "several seconds", but perception is everything and you may feel like it is taking an exceptionally long time.

Instead of channel flipping, you might try using the guide and flipping around there, then selecting the channel that looks desirable.

Ha, this may take a major lifestyle change for me. I'm used to the old sd receiver having an almost instant channel change when I hit the channel up button. When a commercial comes on I flip until I find something interesting to watch. Lots of times I will flip through all my favorites until I get back to the original channel. Needless to say my wife and I don't watch the same TV. Is the guide faster to scroll through? Do the non DVR receivers like a H24 have the same problem ?

Yes, the guide is faster to maneuver through than simply going to channel to channel.

I would also suggest you use your DVR to record a bunch of things that you like, thereby eliminating the need to channel surf or use the guide altogether. The beauty of the DVR is the eliminates the need to watch live TV (and find something else during commercials) as you always have recorded shows to watch.
