Upgrade To HR34?

2616 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Scott Kocourek
I have an older HR21-200 and have a few issues. I called DirecTV and they were very helpful and apologetic. I am not one to keep up on the latest and greatest, so please bear with me.

They offered to sell me an HR34 for $199 installed.

Is that a good price?

Is the HR34 a good HD-DVR?

Thanks!

Well, the full price for the HR34 without any discounts and before any tax and S&H is $399.00 + $49 for installation = $448.00

So that obviously puts you about midway between the fortunate few who managed to get it for free and the max. price.

I (subscriber since '95) got mines for $99 ($126.66 total with tax and S&H)

Oh and ... :welcome_s to DBStalk
New hardware also comes with a 2 year contract commitment.
I thought there was no way to request a specific model when ordering from D*.

The HR34 is separate category. Its filed as a home media center HDDVR.
Exactly. If there ever is an HR35 or HR34-100, then you likely won't be able to guarantee. But you can never end up with an HR24 when a 35 is ordered. Even if the rep tells you there's no guarantee.

Its because the HR34 is not a normal HD DVR. It has the ability to record 5 shows at one time. That alone puts it in a class all its own. Another reason you can specify now is because its not $199 normally. Its $399. They dont have other HD DVR's that they lease that are at that price point so it has to be able to be requested. Hope this helps. FYI I think this and the TiVo HD DVR are the only ones you can specify at this time.
You might want to try some retailers such as amazon or just google the model numer into the search engine, see what comes up. even if you purchase for someone else, you will still be updated to a longer commitment when you activate it, so I don't think there is any way around that.
This is just a continuation of a thread that was closed for a reason, I am going to close this one too.
