Have read alot about upgrades. Below is a list of dtv equipment does any of it needs to be updated.

D11-20, hr20-700, hr20-100, h20-600, h20-100.

Those are all current IRDs. The only 'problem' is the D11 would not be SWM compatible.

The d11 is on a sd tv; if i don't upgrade ird to hd and tv to hd will i loose channels?
eg. espn, nfl sunday etc.

No, you won't lose those channels. They're all provided in SD, too.
