I just had all my rooms setup with the wiring to get receivers in each. I currently own a DirecTV DVR R-10 and have an R-15 that I purchsed over the net coming my way. These will be going in the bedrooms. I have the 3 LNB oval dish, current average service with DVR and I have the multiswitch and all hoked up.

I am getting an HD TV this month and want to to upgrade to the DirecTV HD service. What unit should i get? I've heard different models mentioned, but whats the preferred one for HD? (I want it to have DVR service too). Also, is there anything I should know about upgrading my service?

Any informaiton would be helpful and appreciated.

thank you!:)

First of all, call Directv and have them to install the 5LNB dish as you cannot
get the HD programming with the HR20 or the H20 receivers...should cost you only $19.95 for handling as there will be no charge for the dish...just a 2 year service commitment to Directv...order the HR20-700 DVR as the going rate they now charge when they bring it out to install it is $99.00///

Good luck with the R15 you bought. Most R15's are leased, not owned, and if that is true for this one, you might have problems activating it. (Any receiver or DVR obtained new after March 1st of last year -2006- is leased.)

As to high-def, you want the HR20. The current cost is $299, however many people have gotten them for less. That is the up-front lease cost by the way, not the cost to own. As noted, you will need the 5-LNB dish for full functionality.

The R-15 was from a private user and not a company, so I hope I don't have any problems with it.

As for the 5 LNB, thanks for the heads up! I didn't know I would have to upgrade for the HD. hrmm.. So it sounds like all i have to do is call to order the HD service and they will supply the equipment - LNB and receiver? That should be easy enough, but I have red they vary the price on the receivers depending on who you talk to... Do I have to haggle with them or is it based on length of previous service? BTW, I hate being locked into them for 2 years- is there any way around this without purchasing the equipment on my own?

Even PURCHASING will not get you out of the 2 yr. contract. Activating an advanced product(DVR or HD) requires a 2 yr. contract. Good luck activating that R15 99% of the time they are leased and owned by Directv, if the original owner did buy it before March 1st 2006 it will be owned. There was a 3-4 month period where they were sold before the leasing started.:)

If you go with the HD DVR (HR20), that could cost you up to $299 (plus $19.95 shipping?). People with a long relationship and good account history have been able to get some better deals, though. You'd have to call and explore your own situation. I just didn't want you to get the impression that by calling and saying you want to sign up for the HD package would get you a free receiver.

If you lease the MPEG4 receiver (or DVR), they will provide the dish, multi-switch if necessary, and standard installation free. Receiver/DVR will cost you something.

Just an update and maybe something to help others. I got my R15 and called today to activate it. I caled to activate the unit and (as noted above) the rep explained about the change since March 06 and said ANY receiver I bought would be considered leased. I took some issue with this and told him how could something that is 100% owned by someone else be sold 100% to me and then be considered leased? Asked him if I decided to stop service tomorrow would I have to send back the unit and he said yeah! So I huffed somemore and told him to forget activating it and I would send it back (which i doubt I could have).

He kept me on hold for about 15 minutes then came back and said his supervisor updated my account to reflect the unit as owned by me, but if anything broke, it would not be covered under any warranty (which I never expected since it was bought via Ebay).

Now I gotta callback and upgrade to HD at the end of the month when my new TV gets in. i'm hoping to sqeeze a deal out of them.

BTW, thanks to everyones help, just reading thru the posts gave me alot of info i hadn't had before.

Thanks!:)
