Upgrading to HD w/ DVR

OK, I don't know the exact details because this is for someone else. But I know someone that just got an HDTV, and wants High Definition DirecTV now. But they are something like 1/2 way through a 2 year contract, so it seems anyway like DirecTV is kind of giving them a really bad deal on this. I don't know if it is the monthly fee that is a problem, but they were told it would be about $400 to upgrade to the necessary equipment. Not sure, but I was thinking it should only be another $10 a month for HD sine they already have a DVR.

Does this sound right? And what can we do to get a better deal? I think I paid $100 after a $100 mir when I signed up for HD w/ DVR.

I think there current package now includes the basic channels w. locals, and HBO.

The question needs to be answered by DirecTV, a lot depends on their standing with DirecTV and how long it has been since DirecTV gave that person a deal.

Without those missing details, it's hard to say.

The HD DVR is $199.
The HD receiver is $99.

Does your "someone else" want 2 HD DVRs? That would account for the $400 number.

Deals in the past are generally way in the past - they're not wheeling and dealing like they used to.
