Hi everybody,

I've been using TVersity for several months now to serve my video and mp3's but I would like to use my UPnP network drive to serve photos and possibly mp3's. It shows up under my computers on the HR20-700 but that is as far as it gets.

Any suggestions on how to get this going on Media Share or is the Media Share again too aniquated to run this option like many others?

Thanks!

I don't have experience with network drives, but in order to stream to the HR20, the drive would have to have some sort of media serving software on it. I don't recall seeing much discussion about successfully using networked drives with MediaShare, so it may not be possible ...

Well, I have a 1 TB Ethernet Disk from LaCie, and it mostly works with the current HR20 firmware (Cutting Edge x254). It has an embedded Linux implementation (2.6.12.6 ARM) & some form of built-in uPnP Media Server, along with SMB, AFS, FTP & HTTP services.

Previous CE's would crash the box, or the box would not serve any media (HR20 would 'timeout').

Hope that helps...

I am using the QNAP NAS device as indicated in my .sig below and have had limited results. It is running Twonky.

It works reasonably well for pictures except for the annoying stretching that I get on most pics. The HD DVRs cannot stream MP3s directly.

You can find more discussion in this thread

I also have been waiting for a good Network Share HDD/Server....simple...not just another full blown PC....that has uPNP and embedded media share server software. I think one of the issues is the ones that are out there do not have enough embedded CPU horsepower to stream video. For me I really don't want my PC booted all the time to access content....would rather have on a NAS sitting off my network.

Here is the thread that covers this..........................

Thanks thekochs for the links. I feel the sameway about having to run a PC all the time. When you have invested money in a nice NAS you don't want to spend extra money running a PC just to use it as a Media Server.

I'm still looking for that NAS that can run/stream video/mp3/pics to HR20. The only one I've seen is basically a Server PC from HP.
HP Media Vault which you can load/install Twonky on it. However, just looked at link and there is a Gen2/MV2...have to research it....hmm.
I'm going to repost this new gen question to first thread above. Any success stories with media sharing from a NAS?

I can't get mine to work. I've got a DNLA certified Buffalo Terastation. Pictures work fine. Music in .Wav files work fine. Haven't tried video. .MP3 files, like others, have an x by them with a time of 0 and don't play.

Sounds like yout Buffalo product does not transcode MP3 to LPCM. HR20 does not natively decode MP3s....has to be transcoded. WMP11, Tversity, Twonky do this.

Actually, Twonky will not transcode MP3s unless you have the lame add-on, which Twonky does not provide anymore. When MediaTomb 0.12.0 is released (hopefully soon), you will be able to use this on a NAS box and it will transcode audio (mp3, aac, m4a, wma, lame, ogg, etc).

I built my own Windows Home Server for around $400 with twice the pop of the pre-built HP model (Intel chip, 2GB RAM, 1TB storage). It's completely headless so it takes up little space, requires less energy, doesn't require a PC booted up to run, and adds some extra features like automatic backup so I don't have to worry about my collection.

The one downside right now using WMP is that you can only install WMP10 on the server (WMP11 is not supported on the 2003 Server Kernel). This limits some of the video playback, however, many folks have gotten Twonky, Orb, and Tversity to run on it which adds additional file playback options. MS is working to improve it's media capabilities, including the possible addition of legititmate Media Center extenders, instead of just Media Connect.

Just another option available.

According to a more recent post, it's down to $379, but I'd put that $20 savings into more RAM if you're going to be hosting video.

My specs:

K45 - $95
2GB RAM - $38
Dual-Core E2180 - $70 (this is probably overkill, but I wanted to really push video)
WD GP SATA HD 500 GB - $80
WHS - $150

I was fortunate enough to have a 500GB SATA drive in another machine that I also threw in the server for 1TB of storage. I replaced it with an old 80GB drive since I no longer needed the storage in the PC.

Is this speculation or are there any credible references that indicate it will work. Most of the comments that I have seen indicate that transcoding on a NAS generally isn't possible due to lower end CPUs that they are built with. If MediaTomb can do this on the average NAS, I'll be a happy camper.

I've seen a couple of success stories (credible?) using higher end NAS boxes with Twonky (over a year ago), but this is also part speculation since nobody to my knowledge has tried this with Mediatomb 0.12.0 with an HR2x. A typical modern inexpensive NAS (I'll use the Buffalo Linkstation Live as an example which works in MediaTomb) uses a 400 MHz CPU. This should be plenty to transcode an MP3 in MediaTomb as all it has to do is keep up in real time. In Mediatomb, you are not stuck using LAME (CPU hog) and you can use any linux decoder you wish. I would not even try transcoding video, unless you're using a custom built NAS with a desktop CPU.

When 0.12.0 is released and the compiled packages are available, I am planning on buying a cheap NAS to try with my HR20. I'll have a definite answer at that time.
