"UrgentAction" 721 Swap: Beware Lease Fee

890 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  BattleZone
I was told by the upgrade center (Bethany, 9-11) there would be No lease OR dvr fee for the replacement of my owned (not leased 721. My 625 was installed 9-13.

A lease fee was immediately applied to my bill. I called 9-16 and Angel said there was nothing she could do. She finally agreed to waive the lease fee one year only.

9-16 I emailed ceo at echostar.com.

9-18 I called the upgrade center and talked to Leenda, who I had extreme difficulty understanding. She claimed to have taken care of everything.

9-19 The charge was still on my bill when Nickki from ceo executive office called me and said the lease waiver was for one year only and it was impossible (her words) to extend the waiver beyond that.

I'm at my wit's end. Anyone else having trouble with this? Any suggestions on how to rectify?

I would go back to your contact at ceo. They did agree to waive the fee for me based on the incorrect information that the CSR provided when I agreed to move from the 721 to a new DVR. The ceo office told me the CSR was supposed to only offer no DVR/lease fee with the 522. I suppose you could ask if they could take the 625 back and get the 522 with no lease fee, but I'd press to keep what you have based on the representations that were made to you when you signed up.
You shouldn't be seeing a lease fee for the receiver unless you had a lease fee or additional outlet charge for the old one. If it is the only receiver on the account, you definitely shouldn't see a lease fee. Question, did your monthly bill actually go up after the upgrade?

Yes, it did. From what I was told it was not supposed to.
Was your 721 the only receiver on your account?

Yes, it was.
Then there absolutely should be no lease fee.
I just signed up for this and they said there was to be no fee. Have others been screw&d? I hate to change out the 721 as it works fine but they said it would die.... Have to reprogram Harmony etc.
Dish is changing the encryption used on the satellites, which will require new access cards (purple) and software updates to make them work. 721s (and 921s and 942s) infringe upon the TiVo patent and can't be made so that they don't infringe, so Dish isn't spending any development money to keep them alive; it's cheaper to replace them with modern, more capable equipment. When the encryption is switched over (December has been talked about), a number of receiver models will stop working entirely.

As far as the 721s, according to the upgrade program, they should be replaced with leased 522 or 625s at no charge for the upgrade and no DVR fee. They are still subject to the "additional receiver fee" if they aren't the primary receiver, except that this is called a "leased receiver fee" on a leased receiver. Same fee, different name.
