Does the fan inside the HR20 run at variable speeds depending on temperature?

When I first plugged it in, it was nearly silent. As time went on, and the unit got hotter, it also seemed to get louder. Eventually it had kind of a repeating resonance that cycled every five seconds or so.

Could be my imagination, but it is sitting on top of a DirecTiVo, and it is running at 129 degrees... it would seem logical that the fan moves faster as the machine warms up.

If that's the case, I'll relocate it to cool/quiet it down. Does anyone know for sure?

Can't really open it, can I? Seeing as it is DirecTV's, not mine.

Besides, if it gets too loud, I've still got three weeks to take it back to Best Buy and swap it for another.

I guess that's the upside to the lease, though... if it ever flakes out on me, be it three months or three years from now, DirecTV has to send a replacement, right?

Back to temperature, though.

It has me wondering... the underside surface of the receiver is actually quite hot... it feels hotter than 129. Does the reading max out at 129?

Or has somebody seen a higher temp?
