I have an HR21 connected to my tv via HDMI and to my AVR via optical. When listening to the audio from the TV everything is fine - the audio and video is in sync. But when listening to the audio from the AVR the audio is ahead of the video by a few milliseconds. I have the same exact setup with my PS3 (PS3 to tv via HDMI and optical to AVR) but do not have any video lag issues. This makes me think the issue is with the HR21. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a workaround?

Many flat-panel TVs have as much as 3 frames of video delay (which can be behind the audio as much as 90 ms). Lipsync can become noticeable at 20-40 ms, but not annoyingly so until there is more delay. TVs typically have a built in audio delay to compensate for the video delay, in the interests of putting things back in sync, and this may be why you don't notice it when the TV itself is the audio source.

Hopefully your AVR is new enough or sophisticated enough to have a delay setting (many are). If so, crank some in (obviously). If not, it might be time to buy a new one. The good news is that these days you can get a terrific AVR with all the bells and whistles for under $300.
