In the D* CES press conference it was mentioned that VOD would go into beta in March and then to the public in the middle (summer?) of 2007.

Does this mean that the Easter Bunney will be visiting DBSTALK memebrs early this year?

I sure hope so. This is a feature that I am very much looking forward to.

Thoughts?

Well sign me up. And if there is an "official" place to sign up I will do that as well.

I wish they put in and opt-out. For the people that don't want it to download in the background. I think they is why DLB will get the boot!
But the VAST majority of the VOD, will be... by "on-demand"... aka.. you asked for that content.

The "suggestions" as they are on the R15... are designed to "stop" comming down, if you have anything scheduled... or want to use the 2nd tuner.

Would this(asking for content) be done via the guide? Or some other method?

My question, which I haven't seen answered anywhere, is what will VOD cost extra? And will other on demand content like Howard (Stern) TV be available?

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but my guess is it will work like every other On Demand I've seen. Some free programs, some free movies, movies and series from premium channels (available if you subscribe to that channel) as well as PPV.

Probably obvious to everyone but me: Will VOD be over the internet via the ethernet port? Or is this some two way thing where the content is delivered via satellite. That seems to not scale so I'm assuming it's via a network connection.

I am basing this off of a CE magazine by brother gets....

It will be via ethernet.

I will find out the magazine name and get back to you. Here is the INFO:

From:http://www.electronichouse.com/article/companies_battle_to_serve_you_and_your_tv/

Satellite: Broadband Content, Games and 3D
Satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network are also pushing forward with video-on-demand (VOD) plans. DirecTV plans to launch a broadband VOD service nationwide in May that will be available to subscribers with HD set-top boxes. "If a customer plugs a box into a home network, he'll be able to get thousands of titles-movies and TV shows-delivered through broadband that he can record to DVR," says Eric Shanks, executive vice president of DirecTV Entertainment. Current subscribers with HD boxes will be able to upgrade to the on-demand service via software.

Wow. I had no idea this would be through the internet. I just assumed it would be over the sat. How come cable can do it through the cable (as far as I know).

Secondly, can you use the wireless options that work for viewing pics/music now (wireless bridge I believe).

Sat has never been able to do the VOD streaming due to bandwith limitations.

Since the VOD feature will more than likely not rely on the use of a PC (in other words directly connected to your router) I would not see any problem with getting itto do this through wireless.

What I read (either engadget or Sat guys) from the DirecTV presentation that part of the VOD will be tied to the channels themselves. So if HGTV is channel 229 then the VOD HGTV will be 1229 and any VOD they have available will be on that channel. I would guess it would be part of the Interactive stuff and you'd have a menu or guide to choose what you want to have downloaded to the receiver.

So if you miss an episode of Heroes you could go to the NBC VOD channel and have that episode sent to the HR20 for your viewing. Now that would be a great use of it in my book. No more bitorrent.
