ViiV software, non-ViiV PC and the HR20?

809 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  packfan909
I was finally able to get the HR20's Music & Photos option to show up in the menu, utilizing either cat5 hardwiring or the powerline ethernet adapters - for some reason, I couldn't get any wireless adapters to work.

But right now the HR20 is only able to see Twonky as a media server, and not WMP11 on my Windows XP PC (Media Center Edition). I've uninstalled and reinstalled WMP11 a few times now to no avail. To continue using Twonky, I'll need to pony up $20 for the non-trial version. That's not a bad price, but I'd like to continue to look at possible free options.

So... I've read different threads where it *might* be possible to install the Viiv software on a non-Viiv PC - can this actually be done? And if so, can the Viiv software be downloaded and installed on a non-Viiv PC without a prior version? If this is possible, I'd appreciate any tips, links or advice on the procedure for this.

If the Viiv software is not an option for my PC, are there any other free alternative media server software solutions available? Thanks in advance for any info! :)

Yes, but I didn't see anything confirming that the Viiv software would on a non-Viiv PC?

I don't think there is a way to get the ViiV software from Intel to operate on a non-ViiV box. Your best bet is to run Windows Media Player 11 or TwonkyMedia Server. I have been able to get both running on my X2 AMD Media Center PC and Twonky running on my P4 XP Home box.

Well, I was able to get the ushare software to serve an lpcm file (I used lame to dump an mp3 to lpcm, renamed it foo.lpcm, and it played).

But I don't think ushare supports lame on-the-fly decoding to pcm :( I guess I'll hunt for something else that supports that...

Media Player 11 sends out LPCM natively. Are you able to get WMP11 working on your box?
