My stepfather is a DishNetwork subscriber and is making the move to HD this year with purchase of new TV and all.

He is looking at upgrading to the VIP622. Can anyone give me a quick rundown on this unit. I am a Directv user with the equivalent HR20 and I am very familair with the issues it has but, I do not know if the VIP622 as any.

Would anyone recommend this unit?

Read the DVR review sticky post at the top of the threads page. It is a great receiver. Read the posts here to get an idea of what people think but remember this is a support forum so you will mostly be reading about the current issues.
Like Chuck said.. Check out the 622 review. that should give you an idea of what the unit can do. If you are looking for something particular it can or cannot do, ask and I am sure someone will answer. Hard to give a quick rundown on something like this. Here is a short 10 second blurb.....

Dual Room DVR that has one OTA tuner and 2 Sat tuners. If hooked up to an OTA source, you can record up to 3 content streams while watching a recorded program.
Also check out the CES news sections. Looks like there is a single room DVR coming down the road so it might make sense to wait.

The tips and useful info section might provide some help in terms of getting familar with the unit also.

Overall in my opinion the 622 is a nice unit.
Also, it looks like Dish will be offering the 622 with no upfront cost coming February.
I have had my 622 about a week now and I cannot say enough good things about it. Read the review and then ask any questions...
Thanks for the feedback. I have glanced at the reviews and can see that this is fairly reliable unit.

I apologize for sounding somewhat ignorant to this unit but, I come for the D* community in which there are 600+ people in the HR20 forum commenting on the issues with the HR20. I was just trying to find out if this unit had any similair problems because if it did, I would definetly tell him to stay away from it. He is not looking at doing anything "hi-tec" with it but, just simply "working correctly". The HR20 has issues were it does not work correctly and lakes the features it was supposed to have. He is also new to DVR's and I would not want him have to deal with issues, like the Black Screen of Death, missed recording, caller id not working, HDMI compability issues, etc. that HR20 has.

Again, thanks to all of your feedback.

The only issue I have seen so far is the lack of Dolby 5.1 via HDMI from the receiver, but that is a known issue.

I have recorded about 20 hours of HD programming and 40 of SD just to check the system and everything has been flawless so far.
Next month the 622 will be 1 year old so it has had a number of software updates over the past year and has had a lot of users "testing" (using) it. It is in pretty good shape now. Who knows what the next software update will bring.
He finally got it last week. The installation was delayed due to weather (too much snow and ice on roof). Overall, he is extremely happy with unit. The two TV feature sounds really nice along with the OTA. It also sounds very stable. Thanks for the tip to wait, he did not have to pay for it. There has been two questions thought:

1. Dolby Surround Sound. He is hooked up to the main TV via HDMI. How can he confirm this is working.

2. Currently, he is using "rabbit ears" with marginal sucess. He is 76 and not the best to install a large outdoor antenna. Any easy recommendations for an easy install antenna? Can a Dish technician install one for him?

Last note: I am a Diretv guy with the HR20 that has a list of issues. It will be interesting to compare the two units when I get out there.

DD 5.1 currently only works with the optical cable connection. The next software release is reported to contain the ability to get DD 5.1 through HDMI.

Dish does not install OTA antennas but I am sure you can find a contractor in your area that would be happy to do the job. I put one in my attic just leaning against a support that works fine and was very easy to do. Of course it depends on your location if that will work for you.

Remember that this software update is to provide DD through the HDMI output. The optical output has been doing DD from the beginning.

understand. He has the same audio receiver as mine (in signature below). It does not have optical audio input. I assume he can pass it through standard RCA jacks as Dobly Pro Logic if he uses that for the audio. Is that correct?

Yes. And I've also noticed that I have no audio drop-outs when connecting this way - where I have experienced occasional drop outs when using the DD5.1 optical link.
