Why is it that some channels are louder than others? Also, when I use the volume control on my remote I have to continually press it up or down to increase or decrease the volume, while with my old Tivo remote I only needed to press it once. I've looked through tips and tricks but could not find any info on this. Thanks...

Good question. My (audio) receiver displays a volume calibration number each time it gets a new Dolby 5.1 signal in. It briefly shows something like "dialog norm -2 db" or "dialog norm +1db". I assume this number is part of the digital dolby format. With my old HD tuner (a DTC-100) there was never much variation in these, and the volume was pretty consistent from channel to channel.

With the HR20 the volume jumps all over the place from channel to chanel and, I believe, sometimes from show to show in the same channel. And, I notice that the little dolby number is also now showing big swings - - as big as -6db to +2 db.

Does somebody who understands dolby and audio care to venture an explanation and whether this is something that might get fixed in a future software upgrade.

This question gets asked a lot here. It's not a defect in your equipment. Folks with Cable TV have this problem, I have it on my regular DirecTV Receivers, Tivo-based DVRs and my new HR20 HD DVR. I think it's just poor audio level control from the networks and stations. And because DD5.1 can handle more dynamic range than standard analog audio, those stations often seem even quieter (yet their commercials are still louder!). Just keep your volume control handy.
