My aunt got an HP Pavilion from WalMart for $500 the same day I ordered my $2500 Compaq Presario from Best Buy. While there is no comparison between the two the HP suites my aunts needs. It’s painfully slow, integrated audio and video, 15” CRT display, and she has AOL dial up. The computer sucks period, but it’s good for her, she uses it once every few days just to check her email. She has never had a problem with the machine that wasn't caused by something she unknowingly did.

Actually, what differentiates Wal-Mart from Best Buy, OfficeMax, Circuit City, Office Depot, CompUSA and Staples is the fact that they don't use the "price after rebates" ploy to get you in the store and they don't sell higher priced (over $1,000) models. Every one of the above chains sells similar models made by HP and Gateway/EMachines. Like it or not, these low priced "entry level" computers are the ones that sell, and that's what it's all about. Steve is generally correct in his analysis, but we all need to remember that any of these computers is far more "powerful" than ones that cost several times as much just a few years ago. A few months ago, I bought an EMachines desktop computer (AMD Sempron 3100+ processor,, 80 gig HD, 256 M. RAM, CD burner/DVD ROM drive, keyboard, speakers and mouse -- no monitor) at Wal-Mart for my grandkids -- it cost $298. It's using a KDS 19 inch monitor I had retired in favor of a 19 inch LCD. I added 512 MB of RAM to it and will soon install a BFG GeForce4 video card I have laying around. It's more than adequate for their game playing and internet surfing. The included software alone has a retail value close to the selling price of the system. EMachines computers used to be pretty much junk, but lately, they have been great values, and very reliable.
