Watch Out for the New Crop of Cell Phones

In the seemingly never ending quest by the cell phone companies to alienate their clients, a lot o the new models, like the HTC's and the T Mobile G1 are coming without a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. They instead have a proprietary USB jack for the headphones.

I would give anything for just one cell phone company to operate like the European companies do.

I found it amusing when a Samsung cell phone exec recently commented that the United States market was the last place they were rushing to place new models bcause of the behavior of the cell phone carriers.

The USB jack that HTC uses will hold a standard MiniUSB connector, it just has one notch missing to allow a custom headphone or adapter.

Basically though, Mr. Flowers is right. If you want to use your phone as a music player, make sure it either supports A2DP (bluetooth high bandwidth audio) or there is a headphone adapter.
Almost all HTC devices ship with the proprietary headphone AND a USB mini jack that has either a 2.5mm, 3.5mm, or both. While carrying the USB dongle might be a pain, they do include the option standard and do not alienate other headphones.
