Watching DVR without the dish hooked up

I'm wanting to record a PPV movie to my DVR and take my receiver to a friends house. Would I be able to watch it without my dish connected to the receiver?

I bought a DVR for my parents, and they can't figure out some buttons. So i told them to bring it over to my home and i'll hook up the rca out cables so i can show them how to use it.

But so far no luck on getting a picture from the stuff they taped. (DVR)

Is there a button in the menu that will enable it??

What am i doing wrong?

Chris
I believe you can just click the list button and get to the playlist, but I am not 100% sure.

I tryed that, nothing happen
no - the receiver has to be connected to sat. Not sure if just a sat line or actually in touch wiht the satellite. I have a camper and took my receiver with me this past weekend thinking I could watch some recorded shows at night but no luck.

What a bummer , you need to haul a dish with you so you can connected to satellite to view something on your hard drive.:(
You should be able to watch recorded content without a dish (or signal). Once the receiver has gone through its boot process and is trying to acquire a signal, try turning the power off (i.e. put it into standby), then turn it back on. Once you get the “771 – Searching for signal” message, you should be able to press the LIST button and access your recordings.

I believe you are correct. There was an update, last year, to allow you to watch recorded programs if the receiver recovered from a power loss and did not have sat signal.

The idea is that they're not keen on facilitating violation of your customer agreement; specifically the part about private viewing exclusively in your home.
