I could be wrong, and I'm not at home to test this at the moment, but I seem to recall that the network services are at least used for remotely setting up recordings via the DTV android app. I've used the app numerous times in the past, and if memory serves, I reconfigured some settings on my router once, and the DTV app would not work again until I reforwarded the correct ports and reran network services setup.
This certainly makes sense, since any remote connection (e.g. an android device) would need an avenue by which it could reach the device that is located on an internal network (e.g. the HR24). Now... if the app would let me watch my recorded shows at home on my cell phone, that would be cool... but my home internet is probably too slow for that, which is a whole other issue.
I experienced this too, so I just set the HR24 to use different ports on the unit that was having problems and everything worked fine.
