I did a DBSTALK Search, but no results for the last year. I have two HR24's connected via wireless bridges to provide MRV, DirecTV2PC, VOD, and Apps. Everything works on both HD DVR's, but Network Services only works on one of the HR24. I thought Network Services is how the Apps worked. Since I have D* Apps on both DVRs, this cannot be the case. Thanks for your ideas in advance.

Network services are not currently used for any operation of the sat boxes. ON some receivers they show "success" and other boxes they never show that they are "working" (whatever that means).

In both cases, it doesn't matter, as network services are not being actively used for anything.

Network services are unused. However, trying to turn them on is a good diagnostic step because it restarts certain processes that may have crashed, which can lead to your getting internet access back.

If they're not being used then why does my router log sessions being initiated from DIRECTV to my HD DVR's on the network services ports a couple of times a day?
Earl once said that TVApps use part of the code.
I've never checked my router logs, but all my receivers show the <202> error for network services and everything works.

There is a thread on the specific ports to port forward in your router on dbstalk.com. Remember you cannot duplicate the same port numbers on any given receiver. 27161-27192 is the port range, so manually set first receiver for 27161 and 27162, next receiver 27163 and 27164 and so on. You set them using the scroll function as they are not numerically entered. Then set your router for each receivers ip address in port forwarding for that receivers port range you set on your directv receivers. Some routers with UPNP enabled will not open the ports for network services so this is why you may see a error code etc. After all this it will work 100%. If needed see link.

I think the date [06-30-09] of that thread might say something.
Back then I too went through those steps to get network services working. Sometimes even if I couldn't get them working but could get them started, then TVApps would work.
When I changed ISPs and got a new router, I never bothered to forward ports, since.

I don't know why anyone cares about network services, as DirecTV doesn't.
Maybe if my TVApps weren't working, I'd look at these steps again.

Still doesn't answer the question of if network services aren't being used why are DIRECTV servers initiating sessions to the HD DVR's? If it's not being used why initiate any sessions at all?

I myself want to see no errors whatsoever, an error is an error. This procedure will allow tv apps to work correctly ALL the time.

There's nothing wrong with not liking to see errors.
I'll still suggest they don't need to be working, because for several years, mine always show the 202 error, and TVApps always work too.

I could be wrong, and I'm not at home to test this at the moment, but I seem to recall that the network services are at least used for remotely setting up recordings via the DTV android app. I've used the app numerous times in the past, and if memory serves, I reconfigured some settings on my router once, and the DTV app would not work again until I reforwarded the correct ports and reran network services setup.

This certainly makes sense, since any remote connection (e.g. an android device) would need an avenue by which it could reach the device that is located on an internal network (e.g. the HR24). Now... if the app would let me watch my recorded shows at home on my cell phone, that would be cool... but my home internet is probably too slow for that, which is a whole other issue. :)

Everything works on both HD DVR's, but Network Services only works on one of the HR24.
I experienced this too, so I just set the HR24 to use different ports on the unit that was having problems and everything worked fine.

But that means the Android needs an internet connection for remote scheduling while all other devices don't need one, doesn't seem they would design it that way since not everyone has their STB's internet connected.

Plus I'm seeing log entries for multiple HD DVR's at times when I'm not doing anything with them, for example:

Maybe the key here is which error is displayed.
202 may be one that some of the services work, but not all.
I know if I see any other error, like 100, 301, and several others, that various network features don't work.

I'm not sure I understand this. The Android device is certainly and internet (3g or 4g) connection. What other remote devices are out there communicating with the DTV receivers that are not doing so over the internet? And if not over the internet, how are they communicating with the receiver?

I think I'll disable my network services this evening and see if I can still schedule a recording from my phone.

I have no idea about the log entries you are seeing. Maybe the receiver polls network periodically to check the connection status. ...that's a complete guess.

Any device that's doing remote scheduling uses the satellite downlink to pass the request, not the Internet. The request goes to DIRECTV where it's inserted in the satellite signal.

Just because traffic goes to the ports does not mean that "Network Services" are being used. My understanding is, yes, some TVApps use those ports but in the context of what "Network Services" means, in terms of pushing the button to start them, they are not used.

That's a bit of an overarching statement. Unfortunately TVApps do not work all the time, and there is nothing you can do to your receiver to change that. There are sometimes server issues.

If this is the case, then I'm just as confused as everyone else as to the purpose of the network services. I think I may still check it out tonight though.

At one point they were going to be used for additional TV App-like functionality. That never panned out. As I've said before, think of them like the USB port on the front of the device or like nipples on men.

Thanks for the updated information about Network Services. I set up my Dbstalk Search criteria for 2011 to present. I will not be concerned about the Network Services failing to start on my second receiver.

As a side note, the USB port on the front of the DVR serves to charge my PS3 controllers. Unlike the USB port on the PS3, the DVR's USB port is always active which is a good thing when you have the grandkids. Best wishes!
