What channels are available to 18" dishes? (RV Dish)

Hello,

I am considering getting a wineguard satelite dome for camping and would like to know what channels are available to the 18" dish. I have assumed that the 18" dish gets pointed at the 101 satelite, but I don't know if that is a correct assumption. If it is, I found this site: http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/directvusa101.html

That site lists all of my locals (Chicago) as being available on the 101. Is that true? How can I know what channels I should expect to receive if I go with the Wineguard solution?

Finally, is there any concern with using an H23 or H24 with the Winegard dome?

Thanks!

You will get SD channels only, with the exception of FSTV and maybe a couple other niche channels on the mpeg4 satellites. If your SD locals are on 101, you will get those as long as you are in the spotbeam for Chicago, but will lose them once you are outside the area.

No, you just won't get any HD channels.
Precise info about sat/tpn/channels you would get from gct's thread/tables if you know what sat you're aiming.
Is it only because of the special LNB that prevents me from pointing say at 103 and picking up those channels with the 18" dish?

The frequency band used for 99 and 103 satellites is much much higher than the band used for 101. You need a dual band/multisatellite LNB. Unfortunately, guide data comes from 101 satellite, so even if you were able to find a LNB for only the HD frequencies, you would never get guide data, and your receiver would have all sorts of issues.
You can use the H23 and/or H24 with that dish, but it must be set to the "multiswitch" mode and not the SWM mode. So if you are moving a receiver from your home, it might be necessary to go through satellite setup each time you move it back and forth.

Note that the H25 (the newest, smallest receiver) will NOT work with that dish as it is SWM only.
I checked out GCT's thread and I was able to see that the Chicago locals are available in SD on the 101 satelite. So now that I have figured that out, I am just concered overall about going with an 18" dish option.

Should I be worried about DirecTV changing anything on the 101 satelite like removing SD channels within the next 3 - 5 years? If I go and spend ~$700 on this Wineguard Carryout unit, I'd like to know I am not wasting my money.

On the other hand, if anyone knows of any future devices that may be coming out from Winegard that will be able to work with HD, I'd love to know about it! :)
I would say, next 3-5 years, while many SD receivers out there, you're good to use your small pan. :)
