What dish for tailgating?

3773 Views 46 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  jawilson20
I need to purchase a dish for tailgating. My plan is to use my LCD HDTV at the tailgate. I have the power source, TV and reciever squared away.

My question for you all is what dish do I need to buy and where do you recommend that I buy it. I am looking to get HD from ESPN, ESPN2, Atlanta Locals. Do I need a slimline for this? I have read that the slimlines can be the most diffcult to set up. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

An LCD is a good choice for outdoor viewing but a Slimline can be very difficult to use as a portable dish. It is not impossible, just requires muck more accurate alignment that the old 101 sat. You would need the Slimline to get HD, or an 18 inch round dish your all your SD. The round dish is quite easy to set up and find the 101.
From reading Solidsignal for the 18x20 Triple LNB I see this:
Access to DIRECTV HD programming with Triple LNB. Picks up satellite A, B, and C from the sky (101, 110, 119 degree satellites). Four outputs for up to four satelllite receivers.

Are those the sats I need to use? Is this dish easier to align that the slimline?
If you want HD, you'll need the slimline. The 3lnb will not be sufficient. HD is on 99/103, which as you can see the 3lnb is not able to receive.

Great setup! What are the TV's hanging off of? Is that a pole for the tent?

Yes:
U bolts and a 2x10 with wall mounts attached to the 2x10 and then the TV

I'm tailgating with you this year!! That's awesome.... Where do you usually setup? I used the 3lnb last year some since most of the games are on 119/110.

WAR EAGLE!
Very soon, I would suggest the Slimline 3 for most people. Slightly easier to align.

BTW, if you usually stay in the same geographical region, you won't have to adjust tilt or elevation. Get a circular bubble level for the pipe and always set the pole vertical.

And if you are good at setting the tripod aligned North/South, you can even mark the pipe for a rough azimuth setting :)

Cheers,
Tom

But very soon won't be soon enough. Tailgating starts weekend of Aug 30th at most schools. Rumor has it that that dish will be available in September but probably not generally available until October or November. Bowl games will have begun by then. :)

The new 3 LNB dish is said to be the same size as the current 5 LNB slimline, which is available now.

Yes, is the same dish as the slimline. Only the LNB head changes. But I'm expecting it will be slightly easier to align.

And I do understand tailgating season has already started with the preseason games... ;)

If I could afford a new TV, I would go HD, but I am poor, hence SD

The Dish I usually have for tailgating is a large rack of ribs, corn on the cob, baked spuds, and plenty of beer.

I don't receive anything other than compliments, but it works for me. :D

Uh...can ya move over a bit buddy, you're blocking the screen...
