I started the Piece of Crap thread the other day, anyway the tech says I need a new box and sends me out one. The next morning, after being unplugged all night and taking an hour to reboot my receiver is working so when I get to work I call Directv and say you can cancel the replacement since this one is working ok for now. The "CSR" says OK it is cancelled. Today FedEx delivers a new HR20, I shouldn't really be surpirsed. Do I keep the original box? Do I swap it for the replacement and redo all my settings and SL's and lose my 15 hours of the Twilight Zone marathon from New Year's Eve? I know it is just a software problem. I didn't feel like waiting on hold for an hour so I haven't called Directv yet, will they even let me return the new receiver unopened?

BTW is that enough Q's for everyone? I would hate to be accused of not asking a Q in HR20 Q&A again.

:p

Have a coin to flip?
Got enough lines to activate them both for a day or two? You might test them and see what happens.

Cheers,
Tom

That's probably the best idea.
I would need to unhook my SD tivo in the bedroom but I do have 4 lines into the house. The thing is when it is good it works for a lenghty amount of time but when it goes bad it goes bad fast. Testing for a day or so doesn't seem like enough to really tell if one is better.
Most problems with the HR20 are software related, so if you're going to use the replacement they sent you in the same manner you're using your existing box, then switching them is pointless.

Open the box to see what the instructions are. They expect a box back, if you return the new one, include a note saying it was never used or why you decided to return it (if you test it). I expect they are not giving you a 1 or 2 day deadline to return. Why not run what you have for another week before making a decision?

The first two days I had mine I was having so many problems I called and arranged for a replacement. After reloading to try to have some TV at all, the box just started working with no other problems. I waited a couple hours and then called back to cancel the new box (didn't want to start again with possibly new problems). My new box actually got cancelled and after two months, I continue to have only a few minor problems.

With some experience in this: You have some time to hold both boxes. I'm about two weeks now. If you go too long, D* will charge your account for "unreturned" equipment. When you do send it back [keep the tracking #] they will credit your account back. Worst case: you have the charges on your month's bill.
I received a replacement HR20 on Thursday and (wishing not to jinx anything) I haven't posted since then about it, but so far I have not had any of the lockup problems my old unit suffered from. I did have some audio breakup last night, but it was minor.

I'd say check out the new box.
Since there has been a lot of reported variance in the tuner sections, I would check out the signal strength on the two Sat and two OTA tuners. Keep the better unit.
