I already get my locals (except PBS) in HD through the dish in Atlanta. When OTA is activated, will I be able to get PBS in HD with an antenna? Is there some other benefit to OTA that I don't realize?

-Thanks

Assuming you aren't blocked from receiving OTA by mountains, buildings, or other nasties, by getting OTA you will benefit from better picture quality on the main channels, you will receive PBS, and all the subchannels that your local stations are likely broadcasting.

To see what antenna type you need, antennaweb.org has a good tool.

Cheers,
Tom

Higher quality, subchannels, OTA almost never goes out even during really heavy rainfall, etc...

thanks guys...

Stupid question, but how will I tune into those channels? I'm thinking they would probably be dash ( - ) channels? And I should still be able to record them right?

No, you will not be able to get PBS in HD even with OTA antenna as I have
the locals on HD with my HR20, H20 and the 5LNB dish...however, I also
have a WINGEGARD 2000 outside antenna hooked up to my Panasonic 50"
plasma for backup if the dish goes out....PBS is not in HD on the outside
antenna and will not be until PBS goes HD themselves and won't happen any
time soon as cost would cost too much for subscribers to pay up.
Hopefully the OTA will be turned on within next 3 months so I can get my
sound to come through my Pioneer Elite A/V receiver instead of the tv.
You can call 1-800-531-5000 and ask for at least 4 months of credit
at $9.99 for your HD programming since we are not getting the OTA for
a while yet...:

That is something specific to your area (where your PBS is not in HD)

Here in Chicago WTTW is most definently in HD (our local PBS) and you can receive it via OTA

Why? AIUI, here is no extra charge for the LiL locals and you DON'T have to subscribe to the HD package to receive them. So why should you get credit for the HD pack, which gives you extra channels that are not available OTA anyway?

Yes, that most certainly is specific to your area. Here in the Green Bay WI market not only is our PBS in HD but it also has the best PQ of any of the OTA feeds by far.

GPTV is better funded and therefore airs MUCH better programming than APTV (Alabama Publc TV), yet even APTV broadcasts in HD.

What's the deal with GPTV?
Right now through the dish I receive a local PBS and a national PBS. When I watch Nova on the national PBS there's an "in HD where available" message at the beginning of the show. How do I get to view this in HD?

You can't

Right now, your local PBS station is not being broadcasted via DirecTV's SAT signal

Wausau, Wisconsin's PBS affiliate WHRM sends out 3 digital signals with different programming on each, one of which is HD, and it is very good HD like the others have said.

So even when OTA is activated, that doesn't mean squat for the national PBS station right? I have to wait until my LOCAL PBS broadcasts in HD?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Earl's right in that you can't get the GPTV in HD via D*, but you may be able to get it OTA if you have a receiver. OTA is not turned on for the HR20 yet, but should be sometime in first part of next year.

Oops, just saw your response. As far as I have heard, there are no plans for National PBS in HD via D*.

However, that is not definitve.
