Recent Dish customer. Today while watching programming I was going into the menue and everything froze up. I couldn't get the receiver to do anything, not even to turn off. I finally unplugged the receiver for a few minutes and also held down the power button for awhile. After some time things did reconnect and work properly.

Anyone know why this happened and if what I did is the work around to getting things back to normal.

if you put the sat plug on a power strip and put the power strip on the floor, you can " flip it " on - off with your toe! get the picture?

Your receiver is essentially a computer running a type of Linux. Like computers they can freeze up.

Relatively common both providers. DISH needs power plug pull for a hard reset. Directv has a red button reset under the front cover which is just a circuit breaker to cut power while pushed.
