Local in Locals; basically it's your local channels received in your local area.
So it's the HD locals (MPEG4)?

I've always wanted to ask, who came up with the LiL name? I mean if they are locals, they are locals period. Locals in locals makes zero sense. If you get broadcast feeds from NYC or LA, they are NOT local, hence no need for the "local in" part of LiL, correct? I'm pretty sure there would be a lot less confusion out there if they just called them "Locals" if you get a feed from your local station and something like "Network Broadcast" if you get a national feed.

Is it obvious this has always bugged me? :)

There used to be a law that forbid redistribution of "local TV signals" regardless of where you were distributing it. This law was different for Cable operators than it was for Satellite TV operators. A few years back, the law was modified to allow Satellite operators to redistribute "local TV signals" into the "Local viewing area" hence the term Local into Local or LIL.
