What is the Max number of events you can record

6760 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  andy8888
Hi, we have DVR vip622 and have 80 shows recorded on it with about 12 hour of HD content that still can be recorded. My son said that some old recordings are gone once a new one is recorded. I can't really verify this. All recording don't have a max number set, we mad sure of that a while ago so nothing get erased.
Any idea what might be causing the old shows to disappear?
Or is it correct that you can only have 80 events recorded?
Thanks

One trick that is subtle... IF you set a timer and limit the max events, then later change that... I'm not sure it automatically adjusts what you already have kept.

For example... IF you had set to keep 20... but changed it to 10... It will not delete down to 10 events... you have to do that manually I think.

Perhaps it works the other way as well? IF you set to keep only 20 events, then changed to ALL... perhaps it still is "stuck" at 20 for the existing ones?

Other than that... IF you have that much space left, it shouldn't be deleting old recordings to make room for anything.
Yeah, this is what is driving me crazy. Still lots of space and we record shows every day but my son insists that some old episodes of his recorded shows are gone.
I will do few experiments and see how it goes
I suggest checking the Max setting for the timer. Your description demonstrates the receiver deleting recordings beyond the maximum recordings allowed for the timer. Thanks.

Do other people live with you two? I would sooner jump to the conclusion that some one just deleted his recordings to be honest lol

Go to "My Recordings" and click on "History" on the right. Find the missing events, and it will tell you how/why they were deleted.
Thanks Puck. That is the first thing we checked and it shows # and no number is set.
Well it happened again. When I taped football games today, 2 old cartoon shows that my son taped are gone. I have about 120 events, 80 of those events are the same cartoon show that my son taped. So what ever I tape seems to delete the oldest taped show on the DVR.

I'm confused a bit here... when you started the thread yesterday you only had 80 events total... now you say you actually have 120 events total.

The 622 has the smallest of all the ViP DVR hard drives I believe... so I'm wondering if you aren't mis-reading something and in fact are running close to 100% capacity on the drive.

FYI, the DVR doesn't wait until it is completely full before deleting things... if it is nearing full and is about to start recording something, it will delete stuff in advance of that recording even if after the fact that means it actually deleted more than it had to.
Protect the ones you want protected.
Sounds like you need an external hard drive. I paid E* $39 to activate the feature, Dish has since dropped that charge. All you need to do is buy an external drive. Search the forums for which drives work (i.e. drives that "span" won't work). I have a 1.5 TB Seagate.
The thing is that I have plenty of space to record in HD and SD. Not really sure why the old shows were deleted. For the past 3 days, I have recorded shows without getting any old one deleted.
