Excuse this newbie question...

My HR20 was initially scheduled for the week of January 28, but has now been pushed back to Valentine's Day. Looks like lots of time to wait for more answers and reports...

I have read conflicting discussion about the purpose of the telephone connection for D* "advanced" receivers, including the HR20.

Does the telephone line act as the conduit for upgrades, or do they come by satellite? Does the phone line do anything other than permit Pay per View selections?

Also, will a wireless telephone jack work with the HR20 (as it appears to with my H20 and D10)?

Thanks.

I am not a vet here, so please feel free to correct me where I am wrong guys.

#2 The only thing the phone line does is allow you to order PPV from your remote. You can still get PPV, but it has to be via the website, or by phone (if no line plugged in).

Correct. All you'll lose by not having the phone line plugged in is the ability to order PPV once you reach the $10 limit (once $10 is reached, the HR20 will need to call back to D* to process your PPV ordering info before it will allow further PPV purchases).

Also allows Caller Id on your TV if you subscribe to it. Besides pay-per-view, the other main reason to have receivers connected to a phone line is if you have more than one receiver on your account. That way Directv can see they're all calling in from the same number, and you don't have receivers all over the place (Multiple households).

Is that why I've been able to order PPV without a phone line? I've only ordered two so far.. what's the deal with the ten dollar "limit"?

Also...

If DirecTV wanted to "re-enable" it... The phone line is used to confirm that all units on an account are attached to the same phone line.

Umm, when you purchase $10 worth of PPVs, the access card will not allow you to purchase anymore without it calling back to DirecTV. Just liike what PoitNarf said.

speaking of wireless phone jack, has anyone got their call ID to work while using the wireless jack?? Mine never has and I assumed it was because it wasn't connected directly with a phone line.
