I have an HR21-700 DVR. I just bought an Antec MX-1 HD case and after reading through several hundred msgs I am not sure what HD I should get to put in it. I want the quietest drive I can get and will probably go with a 1TB drive. I see many different models even by the same manufacturer, like green or black WD drives etc. What models do you people who have them recommend.

Thanks.

I have a Seagate 750GB in mine (connected to HR21-100).

AFAIK, you should be able to use most any drive. Although, you probably should keep away from the more...generic brands.

We know that the WD10EACS works fine with Antec's and HR21's.
I believe that other WD drives work too, but I can't swear to the details.
We know that reports are mixed about Seagate Barracuda's, with some folks reporting trouble.

I have two of these running and am very happy with them.

The EVCS version is specifically designed for this use:
"Long-Term Reliability - These drives are designed to last in high temperature always-on streaming digital audio/video environments such as PVR/DVR, DVR recorders and surveillance video recorders"

Also, the EVCS version is quiter:
"Quiet - Noise levels have been minimized to less than one sone* - virtually below the threshold of human hearing" (the EACS version doesn't make this claim"

As with anything, you get what you pay for. The EACS is around $130 at Newegg, the WD10EVCS is a little harder to come by, but Amazon has it for $170

I don't wanna get in a contest about which drive is better, especially since I really don't know... but I'm not so sure about the "you get what you pay for" part of this. Regardless of what the brochure says, the WD10EACS inside of my Antec makes no discernable noise unless you're right next to it. The HR21 sitting next to it makes as much noise (or more), none of which is perceivable just a few feet away. (Now, if I had a really, really long eSATA cable, and had the Antec sitting right next to my head, maybe it would matter then, but that's not how most folks do it ;-)

As for the actual life of the drive, I have no empirical info about that either way, so I have no comment about that.

Seems like most people now get the Western Digital 1TB Green Drive (WD10EVCS).
This is the drive I went with. I found it for a little over $140 with free shipping at buy.com and I also found a 5% off coupon so I got the drive for $135, Not too shabby.

Thanks folks.

Been using Antec and WD10EACS for just over a month now and everything has been smooth *crossing fingers*
Just ordered the Antec. Will I be able to crack open my FreeAgent Pro and swap the HD to work in this enclosure? I think I read it in here before, but now I cannot find any info.

That's what I did.

However, the FAP is a PITA. Take your time and you'll get it.

The FAP enclosure will probably not useable after you get the drive out. (watch, someone will give you a procedure to do it in 5 minutes  )

Good Luck

I did it and it works! Be careful opening the FreeAgent Pro, I sliced my finger open! I'm just happy to have it working, and the Antec's cooling feature is keeping my enclosed electronics alot cooler. That FreeAgent ran EXTREMELY hot.
