3214 is only directv number i can find in the manual and it's not working

I guess the DTV protection plan should get me a new remote but i dont feel like calling at the moment so i'm trying to use the sony to make the tv watchable

any way to use HDTIVO remotes with hr20 maybe?

without a working hr20 remote i dont see how i can even program the sony

I assume there's no chance this is a receiver software issue right? past few weeks i had to reboot a few times and the remote got really unresponsive at times. And the receiver has frozen up for no reason at all. right in the middle of watching a movie or it's frozen and not responded to any button presses

edit...they said try the 00001 code trick in addition to the 981 i already did but nothing..they said 3 days from fedex id get one. Didnt mention return of old one..do they want it back?

Your HR20 receiver is either set to RF mode or the alternate IR codeset 00003, in either case the sony remote using code 3214 won't work. For the sony remote to work your receiver has to be set for IR, and using the default codeset 00001.

You'll have to use the front panel keys to get the receiver out RF mode, or set to Directv(00001) codeset.

Programming code 00001 into the oem white remote has no effect on the receiver itself. You'll have to go into the menu of the receiver using the front panel keys.

With the receiver on and tuned to on the tv, enter menu using the front panel keys:

1. Menu> parental, fav's, & setup> system setup> remote> IR /RF>

2. you will see either IR or RF, press whichever to reveal both

3. choose IR

4. done

With white remote set to code 00001 or the sony remote set to code 3214, either should control the receiver

what does that mean?

The model # of the sony remote is vl600.

If you're sking how to enter the directv code 3214:

1. press and hold SET & MENU

2. press SAT device key

3. enter 3 2 1 4

4. press ENTER

Some keys like GUIDE do not work via the preset code.

If you have taught a single command to this device, it will not accept a preset code, not until you clear the device of any taught commands.

I still think the HR20 is in RF mode, so NO IR remote will ever control it, not until it is put back into IR mode.

The original white directv remote, does it have a FCC sticker on the back?

Why can't you take the remote into another room and just follow the these instructions to the letter, please!! To make me happy, :)

These directions are marrying an RF remote to a receiver in RF mode:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1

4. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
5. enter 9 6 1
6. press CH UP
7. enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #(RID), found on a sticker in the access card compartment, you'll have to back into the room with receiver read RID #
8. press SELECT

sticker is worn away. I went thru the menu manually and confirmed again it's in IR mode. However your instructions didnt make the remote work.

on a whim, i decided to try to set up the white remote to work with my tv. I actually was able to switch it to TV and get it to control the volume after entering the right code

I'm sure this 'diagnostic' means something but i am not sure what.

And i'm confused that you told me to make sure it's in IR mode, which i did. Then your instructions say this is to marry in RF mode

also what would make this remote all of a sudden not work. Nothing has changed in the house as far as appliances etc.

regarding the sony remote:

i even tried the procedure of pressing ch up and power to see if i could stumble on the code by accident and didnt. But i did see one of the hdtivos blink lol. Thankfully didnt mess anything up though. After over a hundred or so clicks, i gave up.

there's no chance it's the HR20 is there? id hate to lose my otherwise pretty good machine and i have tons of stuff on it

It could be the IR sensor, one more thing to try, see if code 00003 works the receiver:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 3

If it doesn't work, then I'd say its the sensor. But you have a RF remote, now on purpose put the receiver into RF mode using the front panel keys. With tv tuned to the receiver, using the front panel keys enter the menu:

1. menu> parental, fav's, & setup> system setup> remote> IR/RF>

2. you will see either IR or RF, tap whichever to reveal both

3. press RF

4. press DONE

Now set the remote to RF mode:

a) dtv

b) press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks

c) enter 0 0 0 0 1

d) press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks

e) enter 9 6 1

f) press CH UP

g) enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment

h) press SELECT

post 9 worked!!!!!

so what does this mean? Is the IR part of the remote bad and that the new remote will work?

I was worried when i got the remote to work my tv volume, i knew it was sending out 'something'.

Thanks very much.

and for the fun of it im trying to get the vl600 to work with it but i am not having much luck. I've tried deleting the dvd and cd buttons and no luck. Sat is already programmed to the hdtivo so i'm not messing with it. I guess i wont push my luck

The remotes are fine, its the IR pickup on the receiver itself that is out. Sorry but with the receiver set to RF mode, it only acepts Rf signals. Anyways with IR out on the receiver, no IR remote, including Sony vl600 will work. You need to have directv exchange receiver??

Unless the part of the post #9 that worked, was using IR code 00003? Or was it switching it to RF mode that did it?

gosh i dont know what made it work, i just followed your instructions exactly and it worked! :) I guess i could 981 it and try it again but to be honest i'm a bit worried it wouldnt work again lol. So ill leave good enough alone.

i wont exchange the receiver, otherwise it works relatively well. and it's less than 1 yr old. However wasnt it weird that when in IR mode the remote slowly degraded then finally kaput! I guess the 'eye' is gone per this outcome though.

so in theory, when i get this new remote, it wont work since it's in RF mode right? can you tell i dont know the difference between ir and rf :)

got the directv new remote yesterday...as expected, it doesnt work..so i guess the IR sensor on the HR20 is 100% fried.

too bad they arent replaceable :) Otherwise i'm pretty happy with the machine..would DTV even give me a refurb if i wanted it since i do have the protection plan or would they say ok the IR is broke, you can have the refurb unit?

and whats the diff between RF and IR and i guess i got lucky the unit has both eh?

If you just tried using the IR remote with receiver in RF mode, of course it wouldn't work, you would need to use the RF remote to put the receiver back into IR mode, then try the IR remote. Since a receiver can only accept either IR or RF, not both at the same time.

IR is infrared, you need Line-of-sight(LOS) to the receiver for it to control the receiver. RF is Radio Frequency, the signal can go through walls, and so you don't need LOS to the receiver to work.
