What to do with D* equipment after cancellation?

1523 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  RJC49
To avoid calling D* and sitting on hold forever, does anyone know what I need to do with my old D* equipment now that I have cancelled and switched to E*. The CSR that I spoke to when I canceled did'nt say anything about returning the equipment, although I was expecting them to. I slick forgot to ask while I had them on the phone. I had the service for years and was out of my commitment period. If anyone knows, please let me know.

To be safe you'd better call them. You might get a bill for them otherwise, if they are leased.

I think the policy is that you must return leased equipment, but they usually send boxes for you to do that.

I have two deactivated receivers that they never asked for, but I'm still a customer. And I'm really afraid I'll misplace or damage them, and someday they'll want them back.

You will receive a return kit via FedEx in the next few weeks. When you get the return kit, pack the receivers, and call the toll free number, then FedEx will ship them back to DirecTV for free.

Failure to return leased equipment within 7-10 days of receiving the return kit will result in a charge for the value of the equipment to your credit card on file. Or it will post to your account if your credit card fails. Then collectors will hassle you.
If you got your equipment before March 1st of 2006, then you probably own it, and will not have to return it. If you get it after March 1, 2006 it is leased and you will have to return it.

As Paulman said, it would be best to call and verify.

If you are past your commitment period, you have had the equipment since before Directv switched to leasing so it is yours and you can do whatever you want with it.

What boxes do you have? On your bill, under FEES does it list leased or additional equipment?
bobneilsen makes an excellent point. Since the lease model began on March 1st of this year and the minimum commitment period is one year, any equipment that is now out of the commitment period should be owned and you can keep it, sell it, do what you want with it.

To be safe, I would confirm that with D*, but it SHOULD be yours to do what you want with it.
So, does that include people who purchased their receivers at electronics retailers (Circuit City) at full price. I don't believe that it shows up on my bill as a lease fee. I've always "owned" my equipment so I am curious about this lease thing it's sort of irritating to tell you the truth. I believe I bought my HR20 in October.

I think the only way you can "own" a HR20 is through Directv (and I recall it is $749). If you got it from Circuit City for $299 you are leasing it and what you paid is an "upgrade fee". There is a $4.99/month fee for all receivers after the first. If it is leased the bill will say "lease fee", otherwise it will be "additional receiver fee".

Well, I guess I'm leasing then. I wish this was more clear at the point of purchase. I actually asked the guy at Circuit City and he said that D* calls it a lease fee but it's actually mine. What a strange way to lease something!
Thanks everyone. I have had these rcvrs. since 2004. I too thought that after the commitment period that I own the equipment, but I had seen some posts that made me wonder. My bill listed them as additional rcvrs. If I havent seen anything from them in a week or two I may call and ask.

Thanks
Curt

Circuitcity & Best Buy advertise the $299 as a cost to lease the unit. No retailer at a brick & mortar store sells it for the $749 to own it. If you want to buy it you have to order directly from DirecTV and pay DirecTV that fee.

Curt,

I would feel comfortable that you do not have to turn over any of your receivers to D*. It is clear from your post that you own these, so there is no reason D* should get them since your commitment period is satisfied.

There was a time (before the lease model went into effect anyway) where you could get out of your programming commitment early without paying a penalty by sending D* your owned equipment. Since your commitment period is over, no need to even think about doing that.

You own them, they would have shown up as leased if otherwise.
Put them up on EBAY as most of us have. I sold 2 HR10-250s.
