Whatever happened to Last Chance?
I hate all day PPV!!!!
Has anyone ever complained to DISH that all movies are now $3.99 all-day tickets. When I did they tried to tell me that I am the only person ever to complain about this.
I have a 501 and a VCR so if I get a movie on PPV I record it in case my wife or I want to watch it sometime in the future. If we ever did rewatch something it is never in the same day.
DISH told me that they conducted market research studies based upon movie rentals. Only problem is that it pretty much looked at video tape and DVD rentals and not PPV. They found that most people wanted to watch a movie at more than one time or did not want to return it right away. This is completely different than watching a PPV.
If more people complain is the only way to get back our cheaper $2.99 for one viewing movies.

Their explanation is bunk, they just want to maximize their revenue from PPV. Before I had DVD, I'd do PPV and tape it too, I hated it when Dish went to mostly all day PPV with only a few at $2.99, then all went to $3.99 except the last chance, and now ALL are $3.99. What a crock, I see their little plan and have stoped using this service completly. A vote with my consumer dollars.

With DVD you have to go to store to get and must have back in 3-5 days. With recored PPV can keep as long as want.

When I first got E*, I was looking forward to the $2.99 PPV's. Shortly afterward, they started with the increased price. I think they should offer some both ways - single view & all day. We'll never see them go back now. My family's viewing habits do not benefit from "all day" viewing.

First off a DVD is a hell of a lot cheaper than $3.99. Not to mention all the extras like deleted scenes, different endings, commentary and much more. Then the quality is higher than DBS especially if you use VHS to record the movie which may or may not be in the widescreen format.
Assuming no Replay TV or whatever it's called you can pause DVD's, rewind them, etc., not to mention you can watch them when you want and don't have to wait until the next half-hour, hour, or hour and a half. But the big thing is renting a DVD is at least a buck cheaper on the weekends and a buck and a half during the week. Then there is a new video store being built in town which could only mean even lower prices I assume.

But with only 2 channels being in OAR, the selection is narrowed down quiite a bit...
I think Last Chance was dropped last december to make some room for must-carrys.
I dont see why they dont have some movies for 3.99 and some for 2.99. I know that I saw on some digital cable system that they had some older movies for cheaper and then the late releases for more like that. The only reason I can think of is that they are afraid it will hurt the late release ppv sales that people will buy the cheaper ones instead of the more expensive ones.

After the merger and additional capacity exists, I can see DishNetwork having more PPV channels and doing like the video stores do, offer first run movies for $3.99 and after three weeks or when they are not "as popular" charge $2.99 instead.

PPVs come out later, have a worse picture, limited selection, and are mostly pan-and-scam.

You can record a copy of a DVD too Of course, just like recording PPV, it's illegal to record a rental.

Of course, just like recording PPV, it's illegal to record a rental.Whatever happened with the blockbuster deal or whatever it was that DirecTv had to get the movies earlier on ppv and didnt Dish have a deal as well with someone on ppv's as well?
Since the price went to $3.99 and DVDs came out, I have not bought a single PPV. I can rent a DVD for $2.99 for 5 days or buy it for about $11, watch it with a pristine picture, OAR, DTS sound and get all the extras. On Dish, I get 24 hrs to watch it, OAR sometimes, DD 5.1 sometimes (and not nearly as dynamic as a DVD) and a fuzzy picture. People who pay for these movies must have a 13" TV. I used my free PPV coupon to watch JPIII and the PQ was horrid.
On top of all that, PPV's come on quite a bit after the DVD is released, so what's the use?

I think they should have kept it at 2.99 for the ppv movies but it was bound to go up sometime just like everything else. Primestar used to charge 3.99 for their PPV movies and that was a good while back, about 7 years ago. I wonder if this caused less ppv sales causing less ppv revenue. If it would have done so then they would have dropped the price back I would imagine. They sure do give out a lot more ppv coupons now than they used to.

It is not illegal to record a rented video whether DVD or PPV. It is only illegal to distribute copies for money. Read that FBI warning.
Also almost any idiot with at least one marketing class can tell you that you don't necessarily maximize revenue by charging more. If they were to charge $2.99 and increase the number of PPV's watched by 50% then they would make a lot more money.
If for one would buy more at the cheaper price as well as would be less likely to good to the video store.
I have tried to make the same arguement in regards to the $4.99/receiver charge. Of my friends and family who don't have satellite TV their big reason is that it would cost too much to hook up their multiple TV's. Cable TV only charges rental fees on decoder boxes but cable ready TV's as well as owned decoder boxes don't cost anything additional.
Dish tried the BS excuse that it costs them $4.99/receiver to maintain additional smart cards on each account. If they simply made one smartcard per account rather than per receiver that would solve this problem. Also there is no way that it costs that much. If they dropped this fee it would sell more equipment and services that would increase revenue by at least 25%. Dish I think is just weak in the marketing department.

I like the all day PPV. Don't like being locked into one viewing time. Its nice to have extra timeslots in case your recording gets hosed for whatever reason. But sure, some last chance options would be nice for older movies.
Then again...I guess I don't really care. I prefer to rent DVDs. Even when they cost more...the audio (DTS!) and video quality is well worth it. Plus, if I like the movie, I enjoy the extra DVD features (deleted scenes, etc.)

When they come out with a receiver that has two tuners in it and two outputs to two different tv's then maybe they will not charge a 4.99 fee for the second outlet and sell more that way. They would have to make the unit UHF so that the channels could be turned from the other room and Dish could charge extra for the unit (for extra features such as UHF and so forth) if they did away with the 4.99 extra outlet fee charge because the customer would make up for the difference in time.
People can pay 19.99 a month and rent unlimited DVD's from netflix, I dont know why Dish and Direct dont have a one price for unlimited ppv's in which people would buy that package when they would not buy one single ppv before.
They probably would not have the adult ppv's included in that though but the customers would have to purchase those adult channels by the month as they do now.
