With the approach of football season coming, and me being 'relatively' new to my HR21, I wanted to set up an Auto-Record series for my home team football games. (Seattle Seahawks)

I only want the games, (no pregame), original airing, and preferably in HD if possible. I don't want other local team shows like "Seahawks Insider w/ Mike Holmgren" or misc stuff.

Title of the games appears to be either "NFL Preseason Football" or "NFL Football" usually with team names and location listed as a subtitle/summary

So far, the best way I have found to set up this Auto-recording is to use a keyword search with the AALL Boolean search for "NFL Seahawks", then setting the First Run flag in the recording options.

This *appeared* to generally get me the right listings for the upcoming preseason games. However, I also noted that other AALL Boolean searches for "NFL Football Seattle Seahawks" did NOT find any listings, even though all words should be present in the title/summary portions of the listing.

(Maybe this is a similar problem to the one reported by steve here:http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=109880&referrerid=59629)

Does anyone have any other ideas or tips on how to accomplish this, other than checking the teams playing schedule and setting up manual recordings for every game?

I figure there's got to be at least a few football fans on this board that have some slick way of getting the games they want to 'magically' show up on their HR-2X.

Generally, I'm actually pretty happy with the Auto-Record Feature (I know many aren't). So far, it's picked up almost every Formula 1 Practice, Qualifying and Race from a regular Keyword (or maybe title, can't remember) AR I setup back at the beginning of the season. It *almost* missed one race by trying to record two copies of the pre-race show on SpeedHD and Speed at the same time, and then due to end padding, not record the actual race on Fox. I found the problem beforehand and corrected it before it actually screwed things up.

I don't use autorecordings at all. I use the search to find candidates and pick what I want to record from the list. It takes seconds every few days or once a week and I then *know* what will be recorded rather than find a bunch of crap on my drive or a missing program.

I did simply an autorecord search:

AALL Chicago Bears CCHAN 3 212

This has picked up every pre-season Bears game so far on my locals or NFL Network. I set it to record "both" not just first runs and it's not recording multiple copies of the same game. It also picked up a pretty funny rerun episode of "What About Jim" where his son becomes a Packer fan and he tries to convert him to Bears. Good stuff. :)

I also have a more complicated one for my Red Wings:

AANY Red Wings Event Live NNOT Post CCHAN 636

This gets me all Red Wings games live (and not repeats as the guide data from FSN Detroit put "live" in the guide data for the first showing and not in the repeats), also gets me pregame but not the post game shows. I will have to redo this one since the sports channels have moved around.

Success with this a lot of times comes down to good guide data that you can key off of. Such as "live" in the Red Wings games. I noticed on a lot of other RSNs they don't have "live" in the guide data for games.

Same here. For football, it's only 16 games, and not a big deal.
For baseball, there are too many variables (eg, EI home and road, local market blackouts). If I check my saved search once a week, I can pick the broadcast I want.

The biggest problem for me of scheduling recordings is will the game be on one of my local stations or on the sunday ticket station? Will the new "gamesearch" make this problem go away? And please post more search tips if you have suggestions.

Thanks!

I plan on doing a search for the full team name (e.g. Pittsburgh Steelers) plus an HD tag in the Sunday Ticket channels only. I believe this should get me only the HD version of the game.

Then I'll add additional ones for ESPN, NFL Network, and NBC. One search each only searching on that channel. Hopefully I can find a tag like LIVE that will get me games only and not other programming. We'll see what happens.

I think the game search will switch to my local channel if the Sunday Ticket channel is blacked out. I think that's how it's supposed to work. I shouldn't need a keyword search on the CBS or FOX.

That should get me all 16 games.

That should work. Also, in past years, HD games on Sunday Ticket were not blacked out locally (just SD). We will see if that continues.

My problem with recording games is that they always run longer than the 3 hours the guide allows. If I forget to add 15 or 30 minutes to the end., I always seem to lose the last few minutes.
If you set up keyword search autorecords you can pad them everytime like a series. Set it once and forget it.

Hey guys. I'm trying to set up a search for recording all live NFL games and have not had any success. I've searched the forums but nothing I've found fits the bill.

Anyone have any suggestions for a search string?

AALL FOOTBALL LIVE EVENTS

that finds all nfl/college games (exception i found so far though being alt big 10 net games).

so then maybe if u put NFL in that line it would filter out college.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately putting "NFL" into your string doesn't produce results for the Sunday Night and Monday Night games beause "NFL" is not in the description for those games (at least the ones in the guide as of right now).

I thought about putting in "NNOT College" but college does not show up in the description for those games.

Here's the closest string I can come up with so far to pruduce the minimum desired results (all live NFL games) and leave out as much of the college games as possible:

Code:
AALL FOOTBALL LIVE EVENTS CCHAN 2 212
If I auto record everything it finds I will get a lot of college games I don't want (not the end of the world) but I will be able to use the pad function to extend the recordings automatically (a must).

Anyone have any ideas to reduce the number of unwanted results?

You'd think that by now there's just be a one click function where you could put in your home town andcheck off the sports you like (NFL, MLB, etc) or pick a college or pro team of any kind and it'd dutifully record the highest definition games on non blacked out channels automatically every week.

I mean, whats the most disappointing thing in the world for a sports fan...sitting down and finding out that your autorecord didnt work?

While it may not be that big of a deal to sit down for 17 weeks with the tv guide and the nfl schedule in hand and manually programming in 3-4 games a week, aint this super duper high tech stuff supposed to make those things pathetically easy?

I note a guide change for the worse when I went from the series 1 tivo to the directivo and its the same with this box. I used to be able to put in my home town teams name, click 'sports/football' and first-run only and get each and every new live game my team was involved with. I noticed with the directivo that this stopped working. Havent tried any permutations of it with the HR's, but if there isnt a way to simply select a team name and get all the games they're in that are new ones, its a travesty of justice.

All SEAHAWKS EVENTS & Sports & Football

This avoids pre and post game shows, those are never labeled as events.

That will get you all the games... Now, are they ever on more than one channel and both channels come in at the same time? If so, you could use CCHAN and set up a couple ARSLs that would allow you to give preference to certain broadcasts...

And I'd pad all those games by at least 1 1/2 hours..

On the pay tickets, they always pad the default guide game times for every sport that is more than sufficient 95%+ of the time.

But in any case, I've been recording sporting events for years and it is pretty second-nature to pad manually.

I always record football and baseball games for six hours. Hey, you never know what's gonna happen. Even at six hours, I have missed the end of a couple of rain delayed Yankees games.
