Got an e-mail from DirecTV with a "special offer":

We'd like to thank you for your loyalty by maximizing your DIRECTV experience. With the right receiver, you can open the door to the entire universe of entertainment and features DIRECTV has to offer.

I wonder what "right receiver" they are offering. The phone number to call is not one of their regulars. Maybe it's worth a call.

The CSR I spoke with was evidently quite new reading the correct script and it took a few minutes to actually understand what he was offering. Turns out it is only the "whole home upgrade" for $99 with a credit back for $99 meaning, in his words, "your only cost is $3 per month for the service". Only the hardware and installation for the whole home network is included. Not, as I had hoped, would I receive an HR34. He did say, however, I could purchase a Genie for $599. I declined all his kind offers.

Spoofers don't have you call a phone number, they don't get anything that way, they have you click on a link.

There has been talk of people receiving upgrade offers to their old equipment. I have an old Sony & RCA receiver that I am hoping that I will get this email for. While it isn't compatible with Whole House, I like my H20 and would keep it. All these receivers are owned.

You may want to call and see if those older receivers are still going to be usefull January 1st. Transmissions will be altered around that date and some older receivers will no longer be supported.

Since the CSR I spoke with last week seemed terribly uninformed I thought I would try one more time for a more informed one and maybe an HR34 and whole home. Struck out again. CSR shuffled some papers then came back and said I already have all HD DVRs in my setup and unless I intend to add another TV they won't provide anything else. No mention of any other enhancements.

In my opinion EVERYTHING!!!!!

There is NO RECIEVER OUT THERE like the one i have as far as speed/easiness to use! -- A RCA DRD420re (Basic SD reciever)

The speed is excellent/its easy to navigate and use and i dont want to be forced to goto one of thier crappy new bloated/bogged down boxs that is slow,etc...... (Like what happend with TIME WARNER and thier navigator crap,totally ugly/slow disgusting garbage just so they could save $$$$$ on it -- I WOULD HAVE PAID ANYTHING TO STAY WITH SARA WHICH WAS 10000% BETTER)

I've got an RCA DRD 480RE on my bedroom TV...this receiver comes along in my RV along with an ancient single LNB Sony brand dish that I mount to a tripod and aim with a nice Winegard signal meter. Satellite TV while camping is a nice luxury.

I sure do hope they don't abandon support of this most excellent legacy receiver. It is lightning fast, changes channels instantly, and is very easy to setup/boot from cold power down.

Two months is not enough time to replace millions of old receivers.

Have you tried a D12?

While much of DIRECTV's HD equipment is somewhat lethargic, the D12 is not similarly afflicted.

The Internet reviews of the DRD 48x series tell a decidedly different story about working well and being well liked.
