Hello, Could someone please tell me what the difference is between HR 22, HR 21 and HR 20 high def DVR'S or point me in the right direction to find the info. Looking to upgrade. I already have the HR 20 and want to add another for another room.

Thanks for the help!

HR20 & HR21 have the same size HD.
HR22 has a larger HD.
HR20 has OTA capabilities.
HR21 & HR22 do not have OTA capabilites (but you can use a seperate device - AM21 - to get OTA).

HR22 is the newest box and since the HD is a bit larger, it's probably the way to go. Of course, if you plan on adding an external HD, that point becomes moot.

Just to add to spartanstews nicely laid out explanation, the HR 22 will give you 100 hours of HD recording vs. 50 hours for the HR20/21. Also, if your locals are already carried by D*, you really don't need the OTA cpabilities.

Unless you want subchannels and HD locals not carried by Directv, like PBS, CW, etc. :)

Only the HR20 has a OTA tuner, and the HR20-100 has an external RF antenna.
The HR21 is glossy black vs HR20s silver.

Hr20s are out of the supply chain except maybe for reconditioned.

Good point... I guess since in the Dallas area on D*, we have most all the major locals in HD (7 channels) except PBS, I didn't think about that.

In Nashville (like many medium-sized cities) we only have the four main networks. It's a factor to consider.

Birmingham only gets ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX in HD via D*. I wasn’t worried about OTA until they started running some college football games on CW21. D* carries it, but SD only. I didn’t even realize CW was broadcasting anything in HD until I happened to see an “available in HD” notation during a game. I’ve always had an OTA HD antenna, but I had it connected directly to the TV instead of the HR20’s. I now have OTA on my HR20’s just for watching these games 9in case I need to do an instant replay).

uhh, I live in Franklin TN (just south of NashVegas) and I get more than the 4 main networks. Maybe you were just talking HD locals? If so, my bad.

I get the following:

2 WKRN
4 WSMV
5 WTVF
8 WNPT
17 WZTV
22 WCTE
30 WUXP
58 WNAB

I was just referring to HD & subchannels, in reference to the need for AM21 for some folks. :)

BB has the HR22 for $199...$30 more for 100hrs vs HR21 50 hrs of hd capacity
Yep, saw that one too.

Keep in mind you may need addtional cables and equipment..
I should be ok cable-wise. Now convincing my wife we need a third DVR may take some convincing. :D

you mabe better off calling D* and ordering your upgrade. You maybe able to beat the retail prices thru D* as well.
Been there done that . . . :D

D* actually told me to check with Bestbuy for a possible better price.

As far as having all the correct cables, if you are replacing a non-DVR receiver you will at least need a second cable, since DVR's require two unless you have a SWM dish.

You will probably need a new multiswitch as well, since if I remember correctly, the standard setup for two DVR's will only handly the two and a multiswitch is required for any additional receivers.

You might be better off asking your question in the Installation section of the forum.
