I am trying to see which would be the best route to take. I currently have Directv with a DVR Plus receiver. I have no HD tv's. I would like to be able to get the Directv on Demand channels. With that you need a HD receiver or you can use the R22 receiver. I hate to have to pay the monthly fee for the HD services since I won't be able to take advantage of HD tv.. Is there much difference between the R22 and a Hd 21 receiver.

The only difference between an R22 and an HR21 is the HR21 gets HD and has a shiny front bezel. That's it.

If you call DIRECTV they cannot promise you an R22. If that's specifically what you want you might call DIRECTV customer service and explain. Sometimes they will give you a credit on your bill, then you pick up an R22 at your local Best Buy or Costco.

Thanks, I think that's the way I'll go. It seems silly you can get them from Best Buy, but the company can't supply them.

DirecTV can supply them, but they just don’t have a way to communicate to the distribution centers and/or installers to deliver a specific model to a specific customer. To them, all R15/R16/R22 boxes are “DirecTV Plus DVR’s” and that’s as far as they go with stocking information. When you go to a retailer like BestBuy or Costco, they have the actual item in hand and you can personally verify the model you are getting.

And if it comes from Best Buy you know it's BRAND NEW. BUT if you are a new customer, you can't take the unit home with you from Best Buy-they tell you the installer will bring it along with your new dish, etc. So be careful you don't "buy" (lease) an R22 at Best Buy only to have an installer with only R15/R16's in his truck arrive to do your install!!
