Does anyone know who comes up with the ratings on Dish Network? I don't mean like the MPAA rating, but the critic ratings. Does Dish Network have their own critics or something? For example, why is "Million Dollar Baby" rated **** and "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" rated *** 1/2, even though the latter was way more popular than the former (in terms of not only audience popularity, but critical reaction and award recognition)? And I noticed that last summer, "Crash" was only rated ***, but now it's rated *** 1/2, and it's a few months later. There's also a lot of other movies that I think have either been underrated or overrated according to Dish Network's standards.

Who determines all this?

Impossible. Leonard Maltin gave "Million Dollar Baby" only ***. And the ratings on Dish Network change once every six months or so.

I also remember last year "The Thin Red Line" had a rating of *** 1/2 on Dish Network. On the next update, it only had **, which is a pretty drastic fall if you ask me.

Good question. I have also wondered this. I also wonder who determines the possible "objectionable" content on the guide (right under the stars and the rating). The other day I was watching Tim Burton's a Corpse Bride, and it was a PG movie, but the warnings were for Violence and Sexual Content. Now I understand the Violence, but the SC? I don't remember any of that in that movie :)

I would be interested to know who rates the movies too. I haven't felt they are bad most of the time, but I have seen some ratings that just seem way off.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I saw there was an old movie from the 40s was rated R, even though it wasn't, and it was for SC. I watched the movie, and it didn't even have SC in it at all.

A lot of times the EPG will default to R when there is no other rating available. It makes the parental locks harder to use but at least it doesn't allow unknown ratings to be seen. "If in doubt, lock it out?"

Incorrect ratings also show on channels that edit their movies. It may have been R in the theatre but the version shown on TNT it wouldn't be R - yet the rating remains. That wouldn't apply to the 1940's movie (which is likely unedited for content).

This has been a pet-peeve of mine. Nothing on Sky Angel is to be R rated, yet many 1940's movies get that rating. I don't think it's due to the lack of a rating (in that case it would be NR AO - not R). I think they see a film's title and there is a similar title form the 70's or later that was indeed an R rated flick, and brand the 40's flick with the R. This it totally unacceptable to me.

The ratings are dredged up from one of who knows how many publicatons and movie columns the Tribune Company owns. I thought it was Leonard Maltin, as well. Perhaps they are using Sam Rubin's (Tribune owned KTLA) horrid opinions regarding what he thinks are good or bad movies?:)

Was watching Rosemary's Baby last night, never seen it before so thought I would check it out. The guide said that it had L, V, SC, but did not have the N for nudity. So surprise surprise surprise when soon after I checked the info there was a scene with a fully nude female protagonist lying on an altar surrounded by 30 naked men and women.

Hmmmmmmm, Maybe Dish needs to pay me to watch all their shows and movies and identify the nudity? :)

The nudity gets an "R", but the religious altar gets a "G", so I would S.W.A.G. the net average at around a "PG", give or take. :sure:
